Cooking with flaxseed oil?

Has anyone tried it? I'm willing to give it a whirl as I'm experiencing brain-related health problems and it appears to have enormous health benefits.

  1. I do believe that flaxseed oil is best used cold as in a salad dressing. I think the nutrients are destroyed by heat.

    1. I've used a little in salad dressing... and added the seeds to baked goods (muffins mostly). I seem to remember that it burns at a low temp, but could be totally making that up.

but I do like it in salad dressings (but sparingly used, like sesame oil) it adds a pleasant nutty-ness.

      1. A quote from Know Your Fats, by Mary Enig:

Because of the very high content (greater than 50-60 percent) of alpha-linolenic acid, flaxseed oil requires extra care in handling to prevent oxidation... Although flaxseed oil is not recommended for use in cooking, it is known to be used in China for low-temperature stir frying.

Maybe eat a lot of omega-3 eggs (eggs from chickens that are fed a high flaxseed content diet). Also, Nature's Path makes great cereals with flaxseed, available at TJ's.
