National Escargot Day
Saturday is apparently National Escargot Day. Any suggestions on the best place to eat escargot in LA? We tried them at La Poubelle a couple of years ago, and I hear Cafe Stella has them. Anything on the West Side?

You can get fine standard versions at Chez Mimi, Comme Ca, Lilly's or Pastis; a very nice nouvelle version at La Cachette; and a delicious cutting edge one (with whipped potatoes and a lettuce emulsion) at Ortolan. Just be patient as they come out at a snail's pace.

I think your recommendations really hit the snail on the head.

And snails may be the ideal Chowhound food--they are gastropods after all!

I know supers like Von's at least used to carry those tubed snail numbers in their "gourmet" sections. And they would sit, and sit, and sit... I would be thinking about shelf life if I were pondering a purchase...

At the Larchmont Farmer's market there's this French guy whose name escapes me, he does sell escargots to go and not out of a can. He also sells some homemade charcuterie that's very fresh and good. He is rather expensive though.
At restaurants, I had some very good escargots in Santa Monica at Le Petit Cafe, and some very decent ones at La Dijonaise.
