ISO pistachio muffins
not that I particularly need the caloric intake, but I find myself longing for the ones they used to sell at the now closed Italian cafe located across from the NYPL on Fifth Avenue around 40th Street. They were a stunning green color and tasted so yummy. Anywhere know where these can be purchased?

There's a deli type place that has them on 3rd around 32nd, or 33rd....it's near the new 2nd Avenue Deli, and I want to say it's on the same block as the McDonald's over there. It's pretty non-descript but they have cookies in the window, and the counter has rows of muffins.
They make the radioactive green pistachio muffin with the pistachio pudding flavor you're looking for. They are seriously delicious even if something is a bit unsettling about them.

Thanks, sugartoof. I guess your screen name is apt!
hhmmm, pistachio pudding flavor? I didn't recognize that flavor in the ones I had but I'll have to check out the ones you mentioned when I'm in the neighborhood.
I agree, there is something unsettling about them. I think it's the unusual shade of green ...

Well the flavor was unusually familiar to me, and I couldn't place it. I decided it was pistachio pudding but maybe that's not it... curious to hear if they're the same style you're looking for.

sugartoof, I gather the consistency of the cupcake you're referring to isn't pudding-like at all, it's just the flavor. The ones I'm thinking of definitely didn't have any sort of pudding-like center. It was all cake-like, only very moist because of that oil in the muffin, I'm sure. The only other time I've found the muffins was at a deli in Boston, a number of doors down from the Rowe's Wharf Hotel.

No, no pudding in the center, it was a straight up green muffin. It just had the same flavor unique to pistachio pudding that you don't really find in say pistachio ice cream.

It's a long drive but the Stop & Shop in Baldwin Place has great Pistachio Muffins (border of Putnam & Westchester). NYC really lacks great muffins - I'll be sure to check out this place on 3rd and 32nd though!

I wouldn't say this place makes great muffins.... they just have a couple unusual flavors, otherwise they're probably using the same mix half the city uses honestly.
There was a huge muffin trend during the 80's...it wasn't as bad as the cupcake craze today but almost.

Probably even less calorie-friendly, Sugar Sweet Sunshine on the LES has pistachio cupcakes my friends and I find addictive. Think of it as a pistachio muffin with pistachio frosting.
