Where to dine in Compton/Santa Fe Springs/Norwalk?

A friend's in town for just one week, is kinda limited to the above areas (& environs), and is despairing of finding a decent mail.

I KNOW there's gotta be some jewels in the vicinity...

(I've already told him about Honey's Kettle, but that's as far as I got)

Suggestions? (ANY and ALL appreciated)

  1. www.taconazo.com -- the very best Ensenada-style fish and shrimp tacos.
www.senorbajarestaurant.com -- the second best Ensenada-style fish and shrimp tacos.

Renu Nakorn - either the best or second-best Thai in California, depending which Chowhound you ask.

Thai Nakorn - the other one.

La Huasteca - nice Mexican place, somewhat 'alta cocina' (meaning not going to be combo-plate glop).

Artesia is near Compton -- there are a dozen fantastic, authentic Indian restaurants on Pioneer Boulevard. I recommend Jay Bharat or Tirupathi Bhimas. Get ice cream at the place downstairs from Tirupathi Bhimas, too.

Also in Artesia there's Ten Ten Seafood, which is good Cantonese seafood. It's not in the places list and I never have luck adding places "in line", so it's at 17901 Pioneer #K, Artesia, (562) 860-8888.

In Cerritos (or maybe it's still Artesia) is Magic Wok, which is very tasty Filipino food.

Buena Park is not very far from Norwalk/SFS and has some very good Korean places. Cruise up and down Beach Boulevard and take your pick, but for a 'nice' dinner out I like Sagan.

Great suggestions as always Das. But I'm elated to see you listing Magic Wok (no secret that it's one of my all time faves). Did you finally try it?! If you did, did I miss your review?

      1. re: elmomonster

Someone brought me food from there. That doesn't count enough to me to rate a review (though the food was tasty -- an amazing thing since I normally don't like Filipino food).

I have a day "off" coming in a couple of weeks on the 24th, maybe I'll check it out then.

      2. re: Das Ubergeek

Are you serious, Magic Wok? I've driven past that place a million times & never even thought to try it. Like you, not a huge Filipino food fan, but have never really given it a chance. Gonna have to try it.

Pics from the Taco Nazo site look great. Might make a trip this weekend if able.

Has anyone tried Bruce's Prime Rib and Spirits in either SF Springs or Norwalk, corner of Imperial and Bloomfield? Have driven by the odd location daily for years, and was just curious.

        1. re: pharmnerd

We have our annual Christmas luncheon at Bruce's every year. It's good, but not worth a special trip. Mr. V's is WAY better.

        2. re: Das Ubergeek

OMG u rock -- jeez, now I may have to go down there, as well!!

          1. re: Das Ubergeek

Went to Taco Nazo (in La Habra) yesterday. Excellent rec Das Ubergeek. Fish tacos were the bomb. Decent sized crispy piece of fish. Perfect proportions of fish, cabbage, tomatoes and crema. They use regular tortillas, rather than the waterproof gummy stuff they serve at Rubios. Great price to boot.

For kicks, tried the al pastor taco, although ok, will definitely skip it next time. Gonna try some shrimp items next time.

            1. re: pharmnerd

Their shrimp tacos are the sexiest food ever. I will totally drive from my office, PAST Los Cotijas, all the way up to Guada-La Habra for shrimp tacos from ETN. And don't forget to try the chiles gueritos, the little roasted yellow chiles with salt-pepper-lime mix on them that are on the stand with the salsas!

          2. Don't know how far west your friend will travel, but JayBee in east Gardena is some of LA's best BBQ. Choose one of two picnic tables or eat in your car!
Some very good Mexican food is to be had at Enriques.
Parrilla's gets good recs for Peruvian roast chicken.

            1. Johnny Rebs....Not Sure of the location but I know that they are in the Area.

              1. re: 420 Reasons to eat

Good suggestion. Also the Long Beach location is reopening May 13 after fire reconstruction is complete.

              2. For dinner have them try the Dal Rae for a nice old fashioned dining experience with good food. Also try La Casita Mexicana for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

                1. re: paprkutr

Is it La Casita in Bell? Not super close to Norwalk/SF, but had some great chilaquiles for breakfast there the one time I went.

                  1. re: pharmnerd

Yeah, Bell and Santa Fe Springs are not super close. It's northbound on sometime hectic 605 freeway. What about Buena Park or Cerritos?

                  2. re: paprkutr

Mmmm.... Dal Rae. I almost forgot about Maggie's Pub also. Great fried seafood and corned beef sandwiches.

                  3. Renu Nakorn is the best Thai food in LA.

It happened to have been reopen in Norwalk last month.

I should get a review up for the place very soon.

                    1. Speaking of Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk, if you happened to be near Imperial Highway, check out Rachada, the Quail legs are excellent.

For Mexican, go to Senor Baja for their fish tacos. I prefer their tacos over the place in Whittier.

If you are thinking about going to Magic Wok, then you are close to Little India. I would highly suggest going to India Restaurant which the dinner combos are excellent.

                      Have fun with those suggestions!

                      1. Honey Kettle? Well, just a little west of Compton and the 110 there is so much soul --Flossie's

To the East of Norwalk just off the 5 are some very good steaks at reasonable prices ($25 to $35 each including two salads, cheese bread, rice and a very large backed potato piled high). Check the link below and then click on the menu.
