Pho SuperBowl - La Mesa

A new Pho/Vietnamese restaurant opened on Parkway Drive in La Mesa. Went today for lunch and had the Pho Biet "Superbowl" without tripe and an iced coffee. Have only tried Pho once or twice before but this bowl seemed to be on par with the other times I have tried it. The broth was light and not very oily. Good tendon and meatballs, decent steak (none of which seemed rare) Overall, a very nice bowl of soup.

The iced coffee was very good, not too much condensed milk and fairly strong.

The restaurant is very clean and very open. The staff was extremely friendly and they brought a bowl of dessert gratis. The dessert was like a very thin rice pudding - almost Horchada-like.

They have a short menu with only 42 choices - pho, bun bo hue, com and bun dishes and spring, egg and spam (!) rolls. Pho is about $5 for a regular and $6.50 for the superbowl. They offer vegetable/tofu pho as well. A welcome addition to the neighborhood.

I dont have kids, but I loved that the first offering on the Kid's Meal is Rare Steak Rice noodle soup - definitely not dumbed down for them!

  1. Thanks JRSD. After reading this yesterday we went there for lunch today.
I am so happy with the restaurant and the fact that I don't have to drive clear across town for some Pho and a good cup of Vietnamese coffee.
I took pictures and had a chance to meet and talk with the owners. All the blah, blah is on my blog www.kokoscorner.typepad.com if you are interested.

    Thanks again for your post.

You're welcome. Try the Taro Shake w/ Boba as well, it was excellent. We went back for one yesterday, though, and they had run out of Boba and were making more. Guess everyone was trying to beat the heat.

I've gone there twice now and have had the pho with charbroiled beef which they served on the side and the hot, milk, green tea..my family and extended family have gone to a lot of pho places and this is by far, is our favorite one! (we also ordered various items from the menu as well)
We love the boba drinks and especially the lychee smoothie with the lychee gelatin, which typically, has boba instead.
They also serve a light,coconut-tapioca pudding for dessert which is excellent. I've never come across any other pho place that serves this except in Garden Grove, Ca.
This place has a great menu with good food & drinks, lots of room, ample parking and excellent service. We will definitely be regulars here!

Thank you for the beautiful pictures and report on your blog. After reading JRSD's post and seeing your photos, I knew I had to get there before leaving town tomorrow to return to Northern Cal. Thanks for inspiring me to go!

        2. My 12yo son and I went to Pho SuperBowl last week for dinner and I am tickled that we can get pho and boba in La Mesa. I had pho tam with roasted pork and it was really good. My son had pho with shrimp and TWO glasses of thai tea with boba! The staff was friendly and the space is clean and fresh. I sure hope they can make a go of it there and I'll do all I can to keep it busy. Actually when I was there it was fairly busy, especially for a Wednesday night. Thanks for the heads-up about Pho SuperBowl.

          1. Went to Pho Superbowl tonight for dinner and had a wonderful evening. The owners are warm and friendly, and happy to explain the menu to novices. My husband had the Pho Super bowl with rare steak and well done brisket. The broth was fragrant and flavorful; the noodles added a filling warmth, and the add-ins of bean sprouts, chilis, and herbs were fresh and tasty. I don't think any of the meat could be classified as rare, but it was all delicious. I had the evening special, the garlic steak over rice. The meat was absolutely delicious, with a lovely caramelized oniony sauce and large chunks of sweet onion. It included a small side salad of a slice of tomato, a slice of cucumber, and a large leaf of romaine, and a huge portion of very good steamed rice. The owners brought a small bowl so that I could share my husband's pho, without me even asking. The meals were more than satisfying, and the flavors were lovely. My husband ordered their shaken iced tea. It was a fantastic full flavored black tea with an almost choclatey aftertaste that was surprising and totally pleasant. They then brought small bowls of a dessert that was like a vanilla tapioca chilled soup, again, different, unexpected and delicious. The entire meal came to less than $17.00. We can't wait to go again and try some of the other interesting items on the menu. The restaurant is spare, clean and inviting, with lovely black and white art photos on the walls. We are hoping Pho SuperBowl stays around for a VERY long time!

            1. I just cut out the article today on this restaurant from the Pennysaver and then wondered if the CH'ers had reviewed yet! Of COURSE you have! You guys are ON IT!

Thanks for the feedback - glad to have it in East County!

Lots of beverage choices-can get to go (the right side door is waiting area for to go and beverage choices- I think trying to get the crowd from On Cue Billiards drop in)
Smoothies, fresh and fusion and milk teas, coffee/latte, frozen yogurt, milk shakes, and "Joy" drinks (fruit and fruit flavor and ice and water). Most small(16 oz) and large (20 oz) sizes. Very nice, especially for East County.

              2. Thanks for letting us in on this place. I didn't mind traveling all the way across town from La Jolla to take my dinner and meet some friends for dinner. We ordered two orders of the crispy egg rolls to start with. My daughter had the pho with the charbroiled chicken on the side. I had the cubed garlic steak over rice as did one of our guests. Another one of our guests had the very spicy pho that they serve as a special. The chow pup in the group had pho ga for the first time ever and ate it all up. I had a glass of wine with dinner and intended to order the vietnamese coffee after dinner but I was so stuffed that I didn't have it. It was an amazingly good meal with enough to take leftovers home. The bill came to $50.20 after tax!
