Fairway coming to Pelham in late 2009!

Here's the reply I got. Anyone have an idea where in Pelham they will be?

Thanks for your great interest in Fairway!

We will be opening a store in Pelham in late 2009. In addition, we continue to look for other opportunities in Westchester County.

Aaron

  1. Pelham???

Excellent. rlee323, my guess would be on Sandford Blvd., down from where Target is. Good for Pelham, a town with foresight.

    1. re: dolores

I'm not sure how much politics are involved with bringing Fairway into Pelham but it's great news. I'd encourage everyone to goto www.fairwaymarket.com and email them and say how excited you are that they are coming - if they see a good response to the news of the store, they might look to add another location further north sooner rather than later...

      1. re: dolores

Sandford Blvd is Mount Vernon. I'm assuming that it would actually be in Pelham Manor where they have the old retail shopping center along with brand new space across the street on Pelham Pkwy near Boston Post Road.

        1. re: dolores

oops, I see someone below mentioned Pelham Manor.

        2. My guess, and that's all it is, is that it might go into that shopping center where K-Mart used to be, south on Boston Post Road, right at the Bronx line. That would be the village of Pelham Manor, though.

          1. re: Pat Hammond

True, Pat, that's another good location. I didn't realize that K-Mart was gone.

The best part is that the parking will be free.

          2. Yeah! This is wonderful news and to all the naysayers and the cynics on the post linked below... well, whatever. I'm just happy, happy, happy.

            1. re: laylag

Yes, it's certainly good news. But I'd be happier if it were closer to Central (nevermind Northern) Westchester than it is to The Bronx. Even Port Chester would be better. But it's a start, and at least there's no toll.

            2. This made front page news in yesterday's Pelham Weekly. I had to smile; I've been spreading the word since I read it here. It's big news hereabouts, though.

              1. re: Pat Hammond

                Pat, help me understand something.
Is Fairway going to occupy the former K-Mart space,
or is Fairway going to occupy the former Waldbaums space (next to the OTB).
I really haven't patronized any of the stores in that shopping center since Caldors left years ago and I'm wondering which of the two spaces would be filled. The K-mart had two floors. Could Fairway be considering that space?

Also, Pat, can you please comment or update us on whether or not this has been corrected ...

'The shopping center site was a manufactured gas plant (MGP) from the 1800s until 1951 and was redeveloped in 1966 for its current use as commercial/ retail space. Department of Environmental Conservation investigations found indications of the presence of coal tar in the soil and groundwater.'.

In the meanwhile, I will read this --> http://www.pelhamweekly.com/atf.php?s...

                1. re: Cheese Boy

According to an article in the Journal News, Con Ed is cleaning up this site.
"Consolidated Edison is doing the site cleanup under a voluntary agreement with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Soil and groundwater under the shopping center are contaminated with coal tar, a byproduct of the manufactured gas industry.'
They estimated that it will take 18 months. Those of us who have had work done in our homes know what an estimated construction time means.

                  1. re: Cheese Boy

HI Cheese Boy. Sorry, I don't know for sure which space Fairway will eventually occupy. I've been thinking Kmart, but not for any good reason. I haven't lived here very long; Kmart closed shortly after I moved here.

I'm glad your question about the environmental problem was answered by 'lucyis'.

                    1. re: Pat Hammond

According to the Journal News "Howie Glickberg, owner of Fairway, said yesterday that he expects to open in a 75,000-square-foot location formerly occupied by Kmart in mid- to late 2009."

                      1. re: debmom

                2. So, the first floor of the former K-Mart space will be the new home to Fairway. Thank you all for clearing that up. We will have 75,000 square feet of food attractions to lure us in there like kids to an amusement park. That is going to be *very* difficult to resist. Seriously, who could have asked for a better tenant?

And, Fairway is now seen as an anchor store. Everybody wins.

                  1. re: Cheese Boy

Where exactly is this shopping center? South of Home Depot? About how far? I live in Mt. Vernon and that is as far as I usually go on Boston Post Road.

                    1. re: rolise

Rolise, 1½ more miles south on Boston Post Rd. The shopping center will be on your right hand side. It's after the gas station on the corner there with the car wash.

                  2. FWIW, this article in Crain's says it's opening in 2010. I love Fairway and I will wait patiently for whenever it opens.

                    1. re: valerie

valerie, I only heard about Fairway in Harlem, I never got there. What is Fairway noted for? Do they have their own line of products? If they have their own line of ice cream, do they carry 64 oz. or 56 oz. 'half gallons'?

                      TIA.

                      1. re: dolores

The original store on 74th and Broadway was mostly for produce, meats and other perishables. Great selection, great prices. Then they expanded and took over the D'Agostino next door and started carrying more grocery items. I lived a few blocks away and went there all the time, but it still wasn't a place that you could do all of your shopping (although I didn't have kids or a husband at the time, so I could get most stuff there).

The Harlem and then the Red Hook store were still mostly noted for produce, meat, etc, but since they were significantly larger, they carried so much more. My husband, daughter and I moved downtown, so my store became the Red Hook store. Loved that place.

It's similar to Stew Leonards (which I happen to like but can't get everything there), but again, now that the Fairway stores are larger, they are more like a real supermarket, only better.

They have some of their own items -- jarred sauces, olive oils (which are great). Don't know about the ice creams.

                        1. re: valerie

Valerie - I beg to differ on the Fairway-Stew Leonard's comparison. I find Fairway nothing like Stew Leonard's. Fairway is much more gourmet with a heavy focus on quality olive oils, cheeses, more "sophisticated" prepared food. I find Stew's prepared stuff to lean heavily toward the fried and their ethnic fare is well - LaChoy level. Fairway also specializes in smoked fishes, organic and specialty type foods (wheat/gluten free, spelt, etc) along with usually excellent produce at very good prices. Again - the produce has lots of products that the middle of the road Stew Leonard's doesn't carry.

I lived downtown when I lived in the city so didn't get to frequent the UWS store. When living on LI for a time a few years back I went to the Plainview store regularly. With the added space (like Red Hook which is more recently opened than LI) Fairway was able to expand their carriage of more regular grocery product and you can "almost" buy everything you need there. I expect with 75,000 sq. feet - about twice the size of Plainview - Pelham Manor will have even more to offer. Granted, you don't have as many cereals or salad dressings to select from as you do in a "regular" supermarket but you can do a whole week's shopping in the larger Fairways. I can't wait and agree they are like real supermarket only better - "Like No Other Store in the World". Do you think we'll get our own billboard? : )

Dolores - Fairway doesn't specialize in own made dairy products and I don't think they have their own dairy label - that's not their deal. However Fairway's selection of cheeses from all over the world and lots from small suppliers puts Stew Leonard's cheeses to shame.

                          1. re: laylag

Yes, you are right. Fairway is definitely more sophisticated than Stews. I guess I was just thinking primarily in terms of produce and meat. I have also bought many a pound of Fairway smoked salmon and its great, as well as platters catered for parties.

I've become a foodsnob when it comes to prepared foods anywhere, though. They always look good at Fairway, but I love to cook and no matter where I buy prepared foods, I always feel that I can make them better! I do like their tuna salad and some pasta salads though.

Trust me when I say that I will be a loyal customer at Fairway when it opens. But for right now, Stews is still better than the supermarkets for several things -- dairy, produce, plus my kids like going there!

                            1. re: valerie

Amazing smoked salmon at a great price.

Also, not sure if its the same exact version at all Fairway's but the potato salad in Plainview is killer. The crazy thing is I'm not even a big fan or potato salad and when I do eat it, I want it to be a creative version and Fairway's is pretty straight forward yet amazingly delicious. And totally concur on the pasta salads. I don't generally like them but theirs is really good.

I like to cook too and know what you mean about prepared foods. If I'm going to pay a ton of money it better be much better than I can make myself for much less and generally it's not.

                              1. re: laylag

Thanks laylag and valerie. I look forward to Fairway opening.

That was mostly snark on the ice cream, I was hoping they'd have a Fairway 'White Rose' type ice cream and still have 64 ounces. Like the dodo, it's all gone.

I agree on the prepared foods. As tired as I get sometimes, I still haven't set foot in a Boston Market.

Smoked salmon AND a great cheese selection under one roof? Sounds like Morton Williams (I don't do Whole Foods) has some competition.

                                1. re: dolores

Morton Williams can't hold a candle to Fairway. Dolores, once it's here you won't believe you were ever able to live - happily - without it.

                                  1. re: laylag

I hope the deli counter and prepared foods area in westchester is more sanitary than the set-up on the UWS. Prepared foods on top of the deli counter with clear plastic to see the food rising about a foot from the counter. Of course, every customer when placing their order either puts their hands on the plastic leaving ugly fingerprints or puts both hands on top and yells the order with their mouth just above the plastic spraying all over the food.

Or an olive bar with "freebies" and plastic cups with 20 or 30 pits all over the place... very attractive.

                                    1. re: cstumiller

You must mean the Harlem location. That doesn't describe the UWS (74th St.) location in the slightest (and I shop there twice a week).

To the OP and others -- don't forget that Fairway (in addition to wonderful cheese and produce mentioned by others) also roasts their own coffee.

                            2. re: laylag

Agreed -- it's closer to Whole Foods, but with much more reasonable prices.

                              1. re: MisterBill2

Like Whole Foods you'll find lots of high quality bulk items such as brown rice, spelt, and stone ground corn meal. In addition, if you like, they have a wide selection of Carribbean fruits and vegetables. I hope they will continue to have the Amy's bread and Zabar baked goods that they have in Harlem.

                                1. re: lucyis

Zabar baked books? Do they have their chocolate croissants? When I've had Fairways in the past they have not been nearly as good as Zabar's.

                      2. Wow this is really good news...hope its true...I am moving to New Rochelle in a few months so I have one more thing to look forward to about it~!

                        1. re: winston669

                          WoW!
I haven't checked in for quite a while but I'm happy to see Fairway expanding to the N. Bronx/Westchester border.
I used to live off of Pelham Pkwy. in the Bronx (back when we were making babies)...This news sorta makes me wish I hadn't moved (or left their employ for that matter) all those years ago.
With the Jersey store starting construction as well, it looks like Howie&Co. will be busy trying to find quality help, among other things.

                        2. Just read that B.J.'s wholesale club will be opening in the Pelham Manor Shopping Plaza too! The Pelham Weekly gives a target of the first half of 2009. I'd never heard of B.J's until yesterday when I saw it mentioned in a thread on the Chains board.

                          1. re: Pat Hammond

S/O, S/O as Costco and Sam's. BJ's does have the distinction, I think, of being the first. I remember them being a novelty in Bridgeport, CT back in the day.

                            1. re: dolores

From what I've read, it seems to be possible to buy less than army-sized items at that store. That would appeal to me. We shall see! Of course it's Fairway that has me salivating.
