Buffalo Burgers or Steaks?
Does anyone know any area restaurants that serve buffalo meat? Alternately, do any local butcher shops carry buffalo meat? It's such a lean red meat option that I'm surprised it isn't widely available (at least in any of my usual haunts). Thanks!

Wegman's carries buffalo meat. Joe's Burgers in McLean has buffalo burgers, Ted's Montana Grill in Ballston has buffalo in a myriad of presentations (burgers, steaks, roasts). I know many other places have buffalo burgers I just can't think of them but if I do will post back.

I'm not a fan of the Ballston Ted's Montana Grill. We had spotty service and even worse food! We got out main meals within minutes of receiving our appetizers (and the dining room was empty) and the sides brought with the meal were cold! Like it had just been sitting out all evening. Yuck!

I go there not often but I guess infrequently because it is right near our house for buffalo burgers. I have never had anyone be rude to us, or spotty service, I mean it is the service I would expect for that type of place. I normally get a buffalo burger and fries though. I have probably had a salad and maybe a meatloaf too, never cold. But like I said we do go infrequently not even once a month.

Ted's I believe serves bison meat (that's different then buffalo right?? No where near an expert here). My bf (who really dislikes chains) loves this place. The meatloaf and bison burgers are really quite good and we've always had good service. Plus its so much healthier then regular beef burgers! :)
In terms of a butcher that might have it---you might want to call the folks in Eastern Market.

Buffalo is a term that in North America normally refers to a North American Bison. In Europe it could refer to another mammal as the term buffalo means a large oxlike old world mammal.

Cibola has pretty good products, though I haven't had their buffalo yet. They participate in a number of local farmer's markets.

Fuddruckers serves buffalo burgers at all their locations, and ostrich at some. I havn't had the ostrich, but the buffalo burgers there are good.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Supposedly ostrich has less fat than chicken and loads of iron.
Whole Foods sells buffalo meat.

Granville Moore's on H street has a bison burger. Not great though. The beer however, makes everything ok.

We had the buffalo burgers at GM's and loved them. Gotta get them no more than medium rare since buffalo is so lean. The fries at Granville's are fabulous. Some of the best in town. This place is always packed.
Granville Moore's is hard to find. Look hard for the hand lettered sign on the townhouse across from the Auto Zone. Worth the effort.

The fries are ok by me - I guess I'm too picky - I like thinner crunchier fries that are the norm at other belgian bars. The aioli sauce is pretty amazing though I must say.

They also have a bison hanger steak... yum.

Both the Reef and Bourbon have it and both have a good beer selection to wash it all down.

The Brickskeller has buffalo burgers, steak, and carbonnade.

OK and you have a wide selection to quaff while you eat,

Well, I think your first stop should be Mitsitam at the American Indian Museum, just seems like the right place for it. I've gotten buffalo from Cibola Farms at my farmers market, too, as somebody above posted already.

IIRC, I purchased frozen Australian buffalo steaks from Trader Joe's a few years ago.

and they always have buffalo burgers in the freezer section.

I don't know which area you are in, but Red Brick Station in the artificial Avenue at White Marsh has a bison burger. I wasn't impressed - way too dry. Beef has fat for a reason. I much prefer the all-beef burgers at Swallow at the Hollow on York at Northern Parkway.

Cashion's in Adams Morgan does a wonderful bison steak.
I've also purchased some from Dupont farmer's market (I think the vendor is called Buffalo Hunters or something like that).

I think I saw some at the Dupont Farmer's Market this past Sunday.

I was going to suggest the farmer's market--the Penn Quarter farmer's market (coming again in April!) always has bison meat in various cuts--I've seen it ground, in sirlions and filets, and in sausage.

In addition to a vendor at the Dupont Circle farmers' market (which had a lot of options), I think the Organic Butcher in McLean has buffalo, too.
