Nice restaurant near Irish College, Rome for wedding meal

Hi I am looking for a nice restaurant that is close to the Irish College, Via dei Santi Quattro 1,
00184 for a meal for my sisters wedding. Somewhere that can hold up to 50 people with a budget of up to €50 per person.

Thanks

  1. You have three problems. Most nice restaurants can't fit 50 people. Your budget is quite low. And there is really nothing nice near the Irish College. Just how close do you need to be? The one thing that comes to mind, not entirely convincingly, is a restaurant further down SS Quattro called Tre Scalini (no relation to the ice cream of Piazza Navona). The premises are attractive, but small, but I think they may have a private room (www.ai3scalini.it). Crab, on via Capo d'Africa, is large enough and attractive, but specializes in seafood and is expensive. Some people have suggested Cannavota, which is on Piazza S. Giovanni, but I think it's awful and is not attractive. La Piazzetta, near via Cavour, is attractive, could probably hold your group and probably meet your price, or nearly, but it's about a 15 minute brisk walk. Well, that's what springs to mind. It's my neighborhood, but the only place I ever eat is the pizzeria. Otherwise we go to Nerone or Piazzetta, or else Trattoria Monti and, for special occasions, Agata e Romeo. Come to think of it, there is one place that might do it for you. It's called Il Bocconcino, via Ostilia. I don't really recommend it as a restaurant. The kitchen is fine, but they're sort of disorganized and unimaginatative, but the place is cute in a rustic sort of way and I believe they have the space and the price and definitely the location, probably 5-10 minutes max from the church. all downhill. I believe it's in the SlowFood guide (undeservedly) or at least was.

I notice that on Jan 03, 2008 at 08:31AM mbfant replied to a comment for a wedding of 50-60 people with a budget of €30 per head and did not make any remarks about the budget being low. mfant is right when they say "Most nice restaurants can't fit 50 people" but there is no guarantee that a restaurant in Rome will be nice just because it costs more than €50 per person. Does the budget include alcohol?

      1. re: Orual

€30 is indeed very low for a wedding, or even for a nice dinner out, but I -- and everybody else -- don't necessarily respond to every item in a post or mean to imply by silence that nothing else needs responding to. I'm sure, like me, many people do this very fast, or at 2 am, or while multitasking. It's not a job, after all. In any case, I'm assuming the 50 is including drinks and that "nice" for a wedding means a bit of atmosphere, a little spiffiness or polish that simply can't be taken for granted in Rome. I don't think anyone would think that paying more, here or anywhere in the world, guarantees anything but paying more. There undoubtedly are places in Rome where a large group can have a good meal and plenty to drink for €50, but the situation within walking distance of the Irish College is pretty much as I describe.

there is a restaurant on SS Quattri on a corner - is it Via Celimontana -that looks like it might be big and spiffy enough to accomodate a group of this size - I remember from our stay nearby that it was well patronized by the locals and that it was full on New Years Eve. My rental landlady (fwiw) liked it. MF, do you know which place that is? I dont know whether it would be within budget or not.

Le Naumachie. It's very cheap. I don't think it's spiffy at all. Franco's young engineers sometimes go there for lunch, and Franco himself has been there with them and said it wasn't awful. I haven't eaten there since it was tiny, at which time I thought it was pretty mediocre but cheap and handy in a pinch. It's on the corner of SS Quattro and Celimontana. My impression is it's a sort of mensa. This neighborhood has very bad restaurants, sad to say, except the pizzeria Li Rioni, which is great.

I guess just about everything above the level of pizzeria in Italy looks nice to me, because people dress well and there are bottles of wine on the tables! It is dressier than the other place at the end of the same block - cor of v. san giovanni laterano?? where we ate a couple times - extremely basic but I had a good fish there. Sorry we were not aware of Li Rioni at the time.

It sounds like the OP needs to look farther afield.

              1. re: jen kalb

The other one is called Lutti or something and is indeed extremely basic but it is always crowded. We haven't been there in about 20 years -- thought it was awful then and have not been inspired to try again. Naumachie is not dressier, just newer, but I will give it a closer look next time I walk past.

well, we werent tempted to go in...
