Citizen Cake - what is it all about?
I recently had lunch at Citizen Cake. I have been there quite a bit over the years, and one time previously after they finished their recent remodel and it was fine. This time we waited 45 minutes to get our food and believe me that really can color your whole dining experience (especially if you are on your lunch break from work). I ordered fish tacos which may seem like a weird thing to get, but If you look at the lunch menu it is basically salads, sandwiches and pizza. Anyway, it sounded good “friends of the yucatan crispy fish tacos, habanero salsa cabbage and avocado” and it was good. Two small tacos, solo, for $11 is a little over the top I think, but you are paying for atmosphere I guess. For dessert we split flight of petits gateaux ($12) which was very nice, but yes, very petite. We also had the cheesecake lightened soymilk frozen macadamia satsuma marmalade which was also $12 and not too good. Do people really go out of their way to eat here?

I only go for lemon sandwich cookies. :)

And I only go for the chocolate sandwich cookies. I'm a total sucker for artisan Oreos. Occasionally there's an elaborate dessert pastry I like. Meals are fine but, as others have said, overpriced. Breakfast croissants are fair, and with Boulange de Hayes and Delessio each a few blocks away, I haven't found a reason to pick up breakfast at Citizen Cake.
But where else can you find a dessert counter at 10 pm in the neighborhood?

No. Not for the restaurant. As you said, it is fine and an ok choice if going to nearby events but overpriced.
I will make a special stop for the ice cream which ... ok, I know it is ice cream and not gelato ... is my favorite gelato in SF ... the style is just too gelato-like to be considered anything else.
I like some of the bread, like the challah and breads are reduced price at the end of the day. I like some of the candy too.
However, the restaurant is not the draw.
