Looking for a Great Burger

I saw Joe's Cable Car featured last night on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. The burgers there looked really good, but it's a bit far from Union Square where we will be staying (without a car). Are there any places nearby that serve a great burger and fries, open late would be preferable since we will be arriving around 10:00 pm, on a Saturday night. However, if the burgers at Joe's are that good, I could be persuaded to make a taxi ride over for a late night meal. Thanks for your help.

  1. You might go to Burger Joint right inside SFO, in the International Terminal.

Pearl's (708 Post Street) is pretty good and is only 3 blocks off Union Square. The decor is minimal.

        1. Burgers are a perennial topic around here. You might get recommendations that better match your preferences if you specify:
          1) grilled vs. griddled
          2) traditional bun or more gourmet options like focaccia, etc.
          3) house-made ketchup and pickles, or just the classics?
          4) aged beef?
          5) fresh house-ground chuck?
          6) grass fed or grain fed?

Among higher end burgers that are less traditional, many like the Zuni Cafe burger, which is available from lunch until 6 PM and then again after 10 PM. Great oysters, nice cocktails, and a classic SF vibe might be fun for you right when you get into town.

          1. re: SteveG

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I prefer a traditional burger joint over something more upscale like Zuni Cafe with its focaccia bread. So Cynsa's recs appear to be more in line with what I am looking for, Grubstake, Pearl's and Mo's. Fresh house ground beef, grilled, bun or a great roll would be my overall preferences, but not absolutely necessary.

          2. Well since its Tuesday I would choose Rosamunde Sausage Grill: 545 Haight Street. But they only server burgers on Tuesday.

            1. NOT worth a cab ride -- it would be plus $15 each way. At Zuni the burgers are wonderful but only avail before 6pm and after 10pm so that might work for you. The Balboa Cafe (mainly a Marina District bar) has great burgers on baguette bread.
