Carolina Country Store

2001 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY
(718) 498-8033

I am compelled to post.

I first stopped in 2-3 months ago and have been back 4-5 times since. Its a long trip for me, but worth it. Looks like a regular corner market from the outside but carries a lot of items that I haven't seen anywhere else in NYC. Like a museum of porcine oddities.

Country ham, liver pudding (like a spiced-up scrapple), souse (surprisingly delicious), dry-cured bacon, smoked hog jowls, C-loaf (I haven't worked up the nerve for this one yet) and some of the tastier sausages I've found in the city. Also some good canned items that can be hard to find; pickled okra, boiled peanuts, etc. Everything I've had has been excellent.

Definitely not for everyone, but if you like that sort of thing, I haven't found anyplace even close. (Which isn't to say they don't exist)

Really nice people working there. Highly recommended.

  1. I'm really glad the store is still there! They used to have a restaurant across the street and it closed years ago. They used to bring up some of the food from Carolina. Here's a 1995 review of the restaurant that also tells you about the owners.

Does the store sell food you can eat there?

my boyfriend got some pulled pork to go on his last visit, and he said that they have some steam table items. i don't know if they have space to eat in, though.
