Pannikin Coastal N Co. SD
I shared a great slice of a chai spice cake and had a great americano while sitting on the porch of this victorian coffee house covered from the rain and mist. The cake is reason enough alone to go here -mildy sweet/spicy with a slight roasty tea flavor. & you cant forget they roast their own beans.
When i was growing up I remember being taken here for breakfast - they still have the egg steamers on the menu!

I buy my beans there just about every week. Hooked on their Organic Sumatra.
Yum, that chai spice cake sounds good.
My favorite sweet there is the chocolate chip cookie dough coffee cake

That one is fun, I love the old building. I also really like the one attached to the Bookworks book store in Flower Hill. I stop there for coffee when I have to hit the road early in the morning heading North. The bookstore is one of my favorite in town, very comfortable and laid back with a nice selection - I've also bought several pieces of art pottery there. The last time I was there was for Alice Waters' book signing for her new Simple Foods cookbook.

...would have loved to have gone to the Simple Foods book signing! The book looks really good too - been thinking of adding it to my library. Alice Q, did you get a copy, and if so, what do you think of it?
Ditto on the BookWorks, but I really (really really) miss the old Del Mar Pannikin. When the Pannikin re-established itself in their old location next door to the BookWorks I was partly hoping that they would bring back the old look, praying that they had somehow stashed away all of that beautiful wood and glass that they had ripped out when they first moved out of that location. Back then they even had a nice Friday music series which really fit the space and brought a lot of people to both stores. Does anyone else remember those times?
The original Del Mar Pannikin had that old-time apothecary feel to it that now only the Leucadia branch possesses. I can still remember the large sliding oak and glass doors that used to separate their retail counter from the service counter, and the wonderfully creaky oak floorboards that one tried not to disturb while watching a Friday performance. (One can still hear echoes of the same old creaks in the BookWorks' floorboards next door...)
On a more culinary note Leucadia's roastmaster has "duplicated/reverse engineered" Cafe Motto's wonderful Indo Noir blend and continues to sell it under that name, and since both the Del Mar and Encinitas branches are owned by the same operator, their version of it is available at both storefronts. (I believe they also own the "dry goods" Pannikin in La Jolla, but not the cafe across the street.) Not sure how or if they actually obtained naming rights, as Cafe Motto is still actively roasting Indo Noir as well, the original source for this blend when they were supplying all of the Pannikin stores.
It's one of those rare blends that works well both for espresso or for brewed coffee. Indo Noir continues to be my local backup roast when I run out of green beans to roast at home and/or I get behind (or lazy!) in my own roasting.

That is so bizarre, I was just thinking about this today - I also really like the Indo Noir for both coffee and espresso - you're right, it's rare that one bean works for both. I also used to like the Point Loma branch - remember that one? It got me through law school - literally. I would go there to study, since I can't stand the silence of a library.

The Downtown post's coffee is really awful - tasted of tabacco. So Next time go to Zanzibar for your cuppa before hitting the DT Library.
