Graffiti (East Village)
Has anyone been to Graffiti? I love Jehangir Mehta and was very excited when I heard about his new place, but I took a look at the menu on the website (www.graffitinyc.com) and I'm not really thrilled by it. It seems pretty meat heavy and I don't eat meat/seafood, so the veggie options really need to be standout if I'm going to go there...

I've went there for a light dinner last weekend and tried out the beet salad, foie gras crostini and the hazelnut chocolate cupcake since we're stuffed with falafels from Taim (it's awesome, btw). The dishes composition, textures and flavors were intriguing but I'm not in love with them except for the cupcake. That worked really well.

I love the (tiny, cramped, really fun atmosphere), the service, the attention to the food, the explanations by J. Mehta. But I just wasn't that impressed by the food. Glad I went, but just not that specular food-wise.

I was really disappointed by the food. Two of us ordered four dishes: Chili Pork Dumplings; Crab Noodle Roll; Braised Pork Bun; and Chili Shrimp.
The chili pork dumplings were interesting, but not great. They showed up with crunchy bits of maybe semolina (but I'm not sure) on them The texture was interesting but the flavor lacklustre. I love interesting, but not at the sacrifice of tasty. The crab noodle roll was confused, I thought. There were too many flavors going on and they rivaled each other rather than complimenting. The braised pork bun was fine, but Momofuku Ssam's is about eight thousand times better. And the Chili Shrimp, our final dish, was truly disgusting. I'm pretty sure the shrimp had been frozen, resulting in that mushy bad-chinese-food really fishy tasting shrimp. It was a very big disappointment.
I can't recall a restaurant I've been to where every single dish disappointed... until now.

What they don't make clear until you arrive is that every single dish on the menu can be prepared for vegetarians, and they are delighted to do so.
