St. Germaine in Bay Ridge - oui oui
Went to St. Germaine for dinner last night. Excellent food, huge portions, reasonably priced, good service and a wonderful atmosphere. What was troubling was that it was empty. I thought oh well maybe it is a Tuesday night, but then walking home the overblown Areo was mobbed. ???????

oooh. That was cold...

Every time I go there, I too enjoy the meal/service/surroundings. I notice it's always empty or close to empty. I wonder:
1) Why?
b) How they manage to stay afloat?

That place is great, and always empty at night, though the brunch can be a bit busier. The escargot is great, with a touch of pernod to keep it interesting, and the snails just melt in your mouth. The special cassoulet was fantastic, with a duck leg on the side. Although I'm used to having cassoulet with a bread-crumb topping, which i missed in this incarnation. My husband had the lamb chops, and my meat and potato father was thrilled with the steak au poivre. I've always found the service benignly neglectful, which can be great if you like being left alone. I particularly enjoy going for brunch when they have a nice selection of "brunchy" eggs but don't neglect people who are looking for something more along the lines of lunch. It's a wonderful neighborhood place that should really be more popular.
