Mucho Ultima Mexicana Manhattan Beach
Chips were fair to good. Salsa & guac were average, magaritas were bland, entrees were cold & tasteless. We had 4 people, tried a wide variety of items, all concluding the same thing: BAD. The worst part: our bill came to @ $125 dollars.
I will stick to my taco trucks & dives, we won't be returning.

This sounds like its predecessor, Michi, all over again. And it's yet another nail in the coffin on decent food in Manhattan Beach.

Thanks for sharing your report...we were thinking of going this week...now I think we'll pass. Maybe we'll try it in a few months, if they last that long. Yes, the area by the manhattan beach pier, which seems like it SHOULD have good restaurants, does seem to be cursed. And when there actually was a good restaurant in the area (Avenue), it didn't last very long. I can only conclude that the average manhattan beach resident is not a chowhound.

Perhaps the average manhattan beach resident boycotted Avenue as being unreasonably expensive for what ended up on the plate. At least this average manhattan beach resident did. As well as everyone else I know.

Well, Avenue was slightly less expensive than comparable restaurants in L.A. proper (average entree was in the high $20's...would probably be around $30 if the identical restaurant was transplanted northward), but it was definitely more expensive than other restaurants in the area. I felt that the price was reasonable for the quality, and considered it a special occasion type of place. But I agree that it was more expensive than other restaurants in the area, if only because there were no other great restaurants in the area--my original complaint. I guess it depends what you are comparing it to.

As another manhattan beach resident I totally agree about Avenue- Overpriced and average.

As for Mucho, you liked it better than I. I cannot imagine the place surviving without major changes.
For former fans of Avneue, let me suggest Darren's, which took over the space, and provided at least two excellent meals to my wife and I at a far more reasonable price. As for which, my primary annoyance at Avenue, beyond what I considered very high food prices, were the prices on the wine list, which were almost enough to make me an abstainer. In fact, for that restaurant I became one.
