German New Year's Pretzel Coffee Cakes

Growing up in Pittsburgh, we always used to buy a German New Year's pretzel each year - it's like a coffee cake in the shape of a pretzel with icing and almonds on top. Is there anywhere around here that sells these - I didn't find anywhere last year. Thanks in advance!

  1. There is a German bakery in Hillsboro, NH

    1. I would LOVE to find one here in Florida, but it is like I am speaking a different language when I ask for one!!! If anyone knows anywhere in Fort Lauderdale, please let me know! Thanks and Happy New Year!

      1. My husband grew up in Pittsburgh, and the pretzel was a huge part of every New Year's of his life! When he moved to Indiana in the 70's, he searched bakeries there to buy one, and he couldn't find anyone who had ever even heard of such a thing, much less made one to sell. His family then used to mail him one each year! When we got married, I started making one for us, and have done so for 24 years now as a great family tradition for us and for our five kids to carry on to their families. (Now in Texas). I do it super simply with my bread machine, using the cinnamon roll dough recipe from the owner's manual. It takes an hour and a half to process, an hour to raise after shaping, 30 minutes to bake, and then just minutes to decorate with the powdered sugar icing and nuts. Some years if I'm ambitious enough, I wrap sugar and cinnamon into it as I'm forming the pretzel. I stretch the dough into a very long "rope," then flatten the rope with a rolling pin or side of a glass, spread soft butter on the top, and sprinkle with lots of sugar & cinnamon. Then I roll the whole thing up back into the rope shape and form the pretzel with it on a cookie sheet. I make a few snips into the edges so it fans out and looks so pretty! It's really pretty fool-proof and is lots, lots easier than it was before I had a bread machine. It's delicious even if you don't roll the cinnamon mixture in. (And more traditional too, I guess.) Too late for this year, but I know you could do this yourself for next year! GO STEELERS!!
