Superbly Executed American Classics?
I have been craving an Egg Salad sandwich... but not just any Egg Salad... something better than I've ever had.... no I am not referring to a big name chef's version.... just a decently priced, true-to-origins... but uncommonly well executed version... same is true of Fried Chicken, creamy Brocoli Soup and other "Cafeteria" dishes
Any nominations?

St. Francis Fountain makes a very good egg salad.

The 49er is basically a BLT w/ egg salad, and I thought it was very good. I have eaten at St. Francis fountain a few times for breakfast too, and I would even venture to say that I think they are better at lunch/dinner than they are at breakfast.

I ate at St. Francis Fountain on Tuesday night before catching flight to east coast....joined by pane and two other friends. Pane and I both had the 49er, which was not nearly as good as last time I had it.
The egg salad was heavy on mayo and relish, not nearly as tasty as the last time I had it there. The mac and cheese was still good, as was the thick shake (banana ice cream w/ chocolate syrup). Fries were good, not great.
So I think the quality of egg salad at SFF might depend on who made it that day....

I love the warm, open-face, egg salad sandwich at Willow Wood in Graton. Hope that's not too frou-frou for you . . . it will set you back about ten bucks. They readily admit that it's a knock-off of Cafe Fanny's in berkeley (that I also love).

Thanks... to clarify... I am not saying I necessarily want Wonderbread, Best Foods Mayo & American mustard... I like higher quality ingredients & $10 is perfectly reasonable... I am just not looking for Veal Sweetbreads topped by Deviled Pate & Quail egg yolk foam... and calling it an Egg Salad sandwich. Variations like say fresh dill or chipotle paste are good... but is long as its not too far a detraction from the original.
Please don't limit it to just Egg Salad... this time of year I tend to crave "Cafeteria" food in general...

I actually like the egg salad sandwich at Lee's Deli. I go to the one on Spear Street.
Its just your basic egg salad but I really like that there's no celery in it. And since they make them to your specifications, I can have it on toasted rye bread with tomatoes & extra black pepper which is how I like it.
They also do a half-&-half - a tuna salad & egg salad sandwich that I like.

My favorite egg salad sandwich is at a deli/liquor store on Sutter Street, across the street from Loehmann's and next door to a 711 a couple doors down from Banana Republic and Sutter Street Garage. I have been going here for a long time and don't even know the name. What they have is the perfect egg salad, nothing fancy. It is perfect on whole wheat bread with a dab of mayo and mustard nothing else. I crave it once a month and it does the trick.
I think Firefly make great fried chicken and I like Maverick as well. Also, Ella's Tuesday's special is fried chicken a proper American style fried chicken and try their chocolate cake which is spongy and not too sweet.

FYI: I went by Bakesale Betty's today and noticed a sign for egg salad sandwich, marked right under the fried chicken sandwich. $5.25. I'm not an egg salad fan but my guess, given everything else BB produces, is it would be worth the try.

I was just coming here to recommend the Bakesale Betty egg salad sandwich. It's on the same bread as the fried chicken sandwich, and the quality of the egg salad is pretty good.

Heh, all that I remember about it was that I was surprised by how good it was -- I only got it because I got there and was starving and they were out of the fried chicken sandwiches, so I got egg salad, which I usually am not the biggest fan of, I think because of the too high for me mayo content of most egg salads. But theirs was very eggy and good.

I noticed that too, when we were at Bakesale Betty's last week. I almost ordered it just so we could taste both of their sandwich offerings -- then I realized it wasn't likely I'd be able to pry half of the fried chicken sandwich from my husband. I suspect egg salad sandwich sales only take off when they're sold out of the chicken sandwich.
We loved the fried chicken sandwich which is no surprise, I think its pretty much adored by all. We also had the pecan sandie which was quite good, a gingerbread cookie which was a little sweet for me and a lemon ice which nicely tart and not too sweet.
The thing I want to hear about is their chicken pot pies. I saw them being made -- they were at the filling & putting the top crust stage -- they looked amazing. The filling looked really dense and chockfull of goodies. Has anybody had it?

It sounds like Bakesale Betty's sandwiches are pre-packaged? I wonder if they can do a Fried Chicken & Egg Salad sandwich =) Maybe they will name it after me???

Not sure what I said to give the impression the sandwiches were prepackaged - they are not.
When we were there, they had 3 people making the fried chicken sandwiches assembly-style a tray at a time and could barely keep up. I did not see them make any the egg salad sandwiches.
I'm a big fan of 1/2 tuna salad, 1/2 egg salad sandwiches.

On the note of the tuna salad -- my nomination for tuna salad goes to Caffe Centro in South Park. A little lemon aioli, decent greens and very good italian bread...best toasted.

Mmmm, Gregoire's November dinner menu has macaroni and cheese with mushrooms, and it's one of the best versions of macaroni and cheese that I've ever had that isn't homemade. Definitely a well execute American classic, and it'll only be around for the rest of the month.
