I find is is a pretty standard desert, and as long as they get it "right" there isn't a whole lot of variance... I mean it's just cream... it's not 1/10th as exotic as people think, you can make it yourself easily :)

its a bit more than cream, and its the getting it right that creates the problem, so many places get it wrong. and it isn't exotic but a true measure of a pastry chef's ability...

Simple things are often screwed up the most in restaurants. Wikked wants to know where the best one is to be found in a restaurant, not at home. I'd be interested also.

Must agree that many chefs manage to screw up the simple things... maybe because it's so simple they don't think they have pay attention to the cooking of it. Starfish's brulee is the best I've tasted, simple, balanced and perfectly cooked .Although that was many moons ago.

I haven't been there lately but Scaramouche used to serve a consistently spectacular creme brulee.

Two years ago Crush had what my girlfriend and myself thought was the best creme brulee in Toronto. Since changing the executive chef and the menu we haven't been back yet to see if it's still that good.

Thanks to a CH tip, I tasted the best creme brule in my experience at Avant Gout.
If estaufarian hadn't specifically pointed me to the creme brulee, I would have likely overlooked it and missed out.

"Jules", just south of Spadina/Queen (on the east side) makes a good creme brulee.
147 Spadina Ave, Toronto, ON, Canada

Milagro has a very good creme brule. I remember it being very wide and shallow, which means a great brule to creme ratio. (On a tangent... my current fave for flan is Mexitaco. Soooo good.)

Spiboy: You got it right....my mistake on the name. We went the one time, and I keep getting suggestions to return for the creme brulee and pizza.

One that stands out for me way above all the others is from Terra on Yonge south of #7. It is heaven in a dish but haven't been there in about a year.

the EPIC @ the Royal York for Sunday Brunch , one of the desert choices is a Vanilla Crème Brulée ..I think you will be hard pressed to find a better one in the city...

Bistro Thuet is serving a Niagara Poached Peach Creme Brulee right now that is fantastic.
You'll find that steakhouses serve the best creme brulees in my opinion. Something about that oldschool feel. With that in mind, Harbour 60 serves a wicked one.
But my favourite, and something I order every single time I eat there, is BYMARK. It comes with various different flourishes/highlight flavours, but it's always creme brulee, and always glorious. A long-time version that is currently still there, and the best I've ever had is their:
"Tahitian Vanilla Crème Brulee With Roasted Marshmallow Ice Cream" -- absolutely otherworldly. And I don't even like ordering desert.
