Last minute reservations for this weekend

Hi All,
I've been tasked with securing reservations for a party of six for this Friday and Saturday night. Ahh, the last minute scramble. We're all coming from Seattle for a tradeshow and I've enjoyed reading up on the "must" restaurants. Of course, I've tried a few for reservations and no luck. I've tried: Azziza, The Slanted Door, and Incanto and there's either nothing available or we'd have to wait till 9pm. That's too late in my opinion. I'm getting discouraged. Any words of advise? We're staying near Union Square but we're not limited to that area. Price range would be entrees high teens to low twenties. Type of food is wide open.

Thanks all.

  1. Sens just opened and it's a huge place, probably has tables.

    1. Opentable shows quite a few options for Friday night at least.

      1. Per Open Table for Friday:
        TWO at 6:00
        Le Colonial 6:45 to 7:15
        Sens 6:00 & 7:00

        1. I agree opentable.com is your best bet. There are several places with availability in the 6:00 time frame

          Friday-
          Cortez
          Bong Su
          Dosa
          Fringale
          Oola
          Pesce

          Saturday
          Cafe Tiramisu
          Isa
          Lulu
          oola
          Limon
          two

Thanks! We're going to Sens on Friday, Azie on Saturday and my husband and I will go to Aziza on Sunday.

          2. Is it possible to secure a table by walking-in and waiting at some popular restaurants? If so, how long should we plan at waiting at the bar. This weekend - group of 4, late Friday night, and anytime Saturday night.

Restaurants I'm thinking about include: District, A16, Incanto, Range, L'Osteria del Forno, or Two.

            Any other advice?

            Thanks in advance.

District can be insanely packed on weekend nights. It's more a wine bar than a restaurant, though the food's very good.

A16, waits are insane but you can leave a cell phone number and hang out at a nearby cafe or bar.

Incanto often has tables available for walk-ins, though with the chef appearing on The Next Iron Chef, maybe less so.

L'Osteria does not take reservations. Fairly random how long the wait is, usually not bad later in the evening.

Two I've often walked in later on and been seated immediately.

Hi - I just realized that I never properly responded to this advice. We had a lovely weekend, with fantastic food, in San Francisco. (I started a long write-up that got lost near the end...and I never took the time to re-write it.)

Anyway, we ended up at Nopa - very late without reservations. Waited 45 min at the bar - great cocktails and quite tasty food (chicken was the highlight - go figure:)

On Saturday, we ate around 4 p.m., without reservations, at Beetlenut. Fantastic service, beautiful space. Food was much better than mediocre.

Saturday night, we waited 30 min at the bar, for the best meal of our weekend - at Elite Cafe. I LOVED the old-fashioned aura of this place, but the food was the real attraction - the pork and duck were phenomenal, but I understand why they sell frozen biscuits too.

My girlfriends and I enjoyed the decor at the Ambassador Room at the Clift Hotel, but the drinks were expensive, wait outside was ridiculous and crowd was unimpressive. Glad we did it once, I guess.

Mission Beach Cafe's Sunday brunch was a gem. No waititng plus wonderful, fresh food ordered from a spare menu. Coffee was strange, but the service was casual and friendly and the room is fantastic.

The Bus (! had to do megabus once...) ride home required a sandwich. The Safeway across from the bus station sold prepared food; my mozzarella, sun-dried tomato on focaccia was well above my expectations.

Thanks again chowhounds -- appreciate all of the advice. Come down to sunny La La land when you need more fabulous food.
