Ortiz Brothers Produce (Santa Rosa)

During this month's Eat Local Challenge ( http://www.eatlocalchallenge.com/2007/08/the-september-2.html ) I've been buying quite a bit from the Ortiz brothers stand at various farmers markets. At last Thursday's night market in San Rafael, I was happy to find some just-picked green beans, when most of the other stands had little greenery to offer. They grow a wide variety of produce and flowers, and if you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to ask, as they'll often have it tucked away in the van. I like the one-stop shopping aspect, and especially appreciate that I can buy organic carrots, leeks, cilantro, and scallions here, the pantry basics. That said, they also have some more esoteric things, including squash blossoms.

I've found Ortiz at Saturday morning's market in Healdsburg, Sunday in Windsor, Thursday evening in Cotati (finished for the season), and Thursday night in San Rafael (last market this week). Returning from Jones Rabbit Farm, I noticed the Ortiz farmstand on Stony Point road, south of town, but didn't have time to stop. I asked one of the ladies in San Rafael about the hours, and she said it's open every day and all day. Someone lives on the property and is always available to help you.

  1. These are the people that led me to Carrenos and also who have Oaxacan Chiles de Agua and the nicest looking epazote I have ever bought --if you ask.

      Have you visited the farmstand?

Melanie - where is the farmstand on Stony Point? I live near there in Northwest Santa Rosa, but don't recall seeing it.

Have you ever bought Yael's garlic at the Healdsburg Farmer's Market? It's all I'll buy any more, as it's so fresh and flavorful (plus she's a friend from when I worked at Plaza Farms managing Bellwether's now-gone retail shop).

And by the way, thanks for all your great feedback on the North Bay. You are a fountain of great info. Maybe we'll run into each other at the SR GO sometime!

Let's see, retracing my path from Jones, I turned onto Stony Point from Millbrae Avenue and headed north. The Ortiz farmstand was on the east side of Stony Point Road, probably just a little south of Todd Road. Please let us know if you scope it out.

I love Yael's garlic (Partners in Garlic stand).

Two weekends ago, I saw the first lacinato kale at Yael's stand too and bought some along with some chard for the body of a green herb soup featuring fresh herbs from my friends' garden. Topped with the requisite swirl of Bellwether creme fraiche, of course!
