Exciting News - Dean & DeLuca coming to Newport Beach!

Our Daily Pilot newspaper reports today that Dean & DeLuca will be building a store in Fashion Island near Atrium Court, to open in 2009. Can't they just take over an already built store & open sooner? Don't think I can wait that long... Napa is the only other D & D in California. Best news I've heard all week...

  1. Oh, then I guess I'll have to put in my request to my lender to refinance my home loan in time for this opening.

    1. The article says gourmet. I've never eaten at a Dean & DeLuca, is it a coffee shop like Starbucks, or real good food?

Not a coffee shop, a super high end grocer. Think Bristol Farms magnified 10x with more esoteric stuff. Whole Foods not leaving enough of a dent in your wallet? D&D probably has a deeper selection of stuff in each department. Less of the prosaic stuff you can get just anywhere, and more of the unusual stuff produced domestically and overseas.

I'm stoked to see them open nearby. Not stoked to miss a mortgage payment because I had to buy this cheese and that Spanish ham and...

      2. That's great, but it's still too far of a drive for me in Hollywood. Maybe this will make it easier to get seasonal stuff delivered, though, especially TRUFFLES.

        1. (Believe it or not) my yoga partner is related to a winemaker in Napa. Said winemaker happens to be an executive of D&D and did mention that they were scoping out cities for an OC location. I told him he'd be stupid not to select Newport. It just makes sense.

So I used to think it was all about Bristol Farms, then Whole Foods (The District) blew me away. I was up in Napa scoping wedding sites when we finally checked out D&D. Holy credit card debt. I can't wait.

          1. There are no words for the joy I feel right now with this news!

For many years the orginal NYC D&D was my single favorite place in the whole world.
Too bad Newport is still three hours from my home but it is nice to know that a bit of culinary heaven will be even that close.

            1. OMG, There goes my bank balance and any hopes I'd had about dropping a few pounds !

This is really great news, thanks for sharing !

haha feel the same here, but at least we have 2 years to fatten our wallets & trim our bodies (before the trend gets reversed)

              2. Yes! YEs!! YES!!! Can't they get it built any faster? I'll put on my tool belt and help!

                1. Thanks for letting us know! I guess I'll have to make the drive to the Other Country--I mean Orange County in 2009. Why can't they build one in L.A...

                  1. I'm surprised they announced so far in advance and wonder what the financially strongest competition -- Whole Foods and its new buddy Wild Oats/Henry's -- will come up with in the intervening two years? I used to shop regularly at the Georgetown D&D, and it was a great place where you could spend a lot of money very quickly. The new location will also significantly increase the gas budget for many people, but not me -- I'll just stop by on my way to Chino Farm!
