grilled sardines
I had great grilled sardines in Portugal. I will be visiting NYC on LaborDay weekend and would love to find a restaurant that serves them. Any ideas?

The greeks do a good simple grilled version - very similar to the ones I had in Lisbon. I go to Taverna Kyclades for mine - Astoria near the Ditmars stop. I know it's not Manhattan, but it's worth the trip.

thanks for all the great choices. I grew up in Queens so a trip to Astoria seems to be in order. Do you think Friday, Labor day weekend at 5:30pm will already require a long wait?

They tend to get lines after about 7 so i would think you'd be safe at around 5:30.

While it is a train ride from the city, there is a restaurant in Newark called Seabra. Just take the train from Grand Central Station and get off in Newark. Ferry Street is right by the train station. Walk down Ferry Street 4 or 5 blocks and it is there on the left - just ask if you don't see it. My husband is from Portugal so we go there whenever we can - they also have great Paella, Pork and Clams Alentejano, Rojoes, Bolos Bacalau and all the other things I'm sure you enjoyed in Portugal. Also, there are several coffee shops where you can get a nice galao or bica and a few pasteis de nata. MMMM. Now I've gone and made myself hungry. Nuts.

Yum. Best one I had were at Pylos and LaVagna (they were a special - cold and in an orange vinaigrette). We order them almost every time we go to Pylos.
