Authentic spices: Za'atar needed
I am almost done with my stash of za'atar I brought home from a trip to Israel. Where in NYC can I find some as fresh and as good (or nearly as good and preferably not from a jar) as the what I bought in the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv. Homemade pita chips don't taste as good without the za'atar! Thanks!

Kalustyan's, of course, OR you could go Wed, Fri or Sat. to the Union Square Greenmarket and get a couple of fresh Za'atar plants from Oak Grove Plantation (the huge tent with the green and white stripes on 17th street). I'm enjoying what I've planted in my herb garden.

I picked up a plant yesterday (thanks)-but in looking it up, I see there is a plant and then there is a mix of thyme, sesame seed, marjoram and sumac...
Anyone care to enlighten me?

Gosh, I hope ChefJune and I don't incur a large fine from the za'atar police.
I think it tastes like a hot version of oregano. Thanks.

Kalustyan's, on Lex, near 28th St., carries several types of za'atar, including an Israeli blend.

They always seem to have it at the Soho Dean & Deluca as well--I've bought it there for a dinner party.

Penzey's has a blend they call "Zatar." Maybe you can stop by their store in the Grand Central Market (onces the area is unfrozen from the Steam Pipe Explosion debacle), and take a whif.
