Authentic spices: Za'atar needed

I am almost done with my stash of za'atar I brought home from a trip to Israel. Where in NYC can I find some as fresh and as good (or nearly as good and preferably not from a jar) as the what I bought in the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv. Homemade pita chips don't taste as good without the za'atar! Thanks!

  1. Kalyustan's - I believe they have several varieties.

      1. Kalustyan's, of course, OR you could go Wed, Fri or Sat. to the Union Square Greenmarket and get a couple of fresh Za'atar plants from Oak Grove Plantation (the huge tent with the green and white stripes on 17th street). I'm enjoying what I've planted in my herb garden.

I picked up a plant yesterday (thanks)-but in looking it up, I see there is a plant and then there is a mix of thyme, sesame seed, marjoram and sumac...
          Anyone care to enlighten me?

Gosh, I hope ChefJune and I don't incur a large fine from the za'atar police.
I think it tastes like a hot version of oregano. Thanks.

        2. Kalustyan's, on Lex, near 28th St., carries several types of za'atar, including an Israeli blend.

          1. Thanks all - I am off to Kalustyan's!

            1. They always seem to have it at the Soho Dean & Deluca as well--I've bought it there for a dinner party.

              1. Penzey's has a blend they call "Zatar." Maybe you can stop by their store in the Grand Central Market (onces the area is unfrozen from the Steam Pipe Explosion debacle), and take a whif.
