marzipan stollen
I am looking for some German marzipan stollen without preservative or hydrogenated fats. Any idea where to find this?

I saw some great looking imported stollen made with butter and no chemicals at Costco in SF. And of course, being Costco, the price was cheep, cheep, cheep. But as I wasn't on the lookout for marzipan specifically, it didn't stick in my mind whether that was one of the ingredients.

I found some regular stollen at trader joe's with no preservative. Marzipan I'm not sure where to find.

Last time I was at Trader Joes, they also had marzipan stollen.

Let me clarify. TJ has stollen with no preservatives; TJ has stollen with marzipan. TJ does not have marzipan stollen with no preservatives, which is what I am asking for.

Try calling The Junket in El Cerrito. I was there a few weeks ago and think I noticed stollen.

How about Dittmers in Mountain View? While I wasn't looking for stollen, I noted they had a wide variety of good German imports.

I've got a recipe (which I'd be dee-lighted to post on the Home Cooking page :-) if you're interested. It's not all that hard, makes two and is delish. Yes, I know lots of stollen is made ahead and sold, but the difference is night and day, having fresh stollen! and what a gift it makes!

Please do post your recipe. I too, am especially interested that it contains marzipan.

Yeah, please give a link to that recipe, I'm sure it is appropriate, since there seems not to be any place in the city which has what I'm looking for, I might as well make it.

Not sure if it's exactly what you want, but I saw a lot of Stollen at (Cost Plus) World Market fairly recently. It was standard German import stuff.

I had some at cost plus in the past. I do believe it has some hydro fats/preservatives in it.

I saw Holiday Stollen at Virginia Bakery in Berkeley. They make it in house, so I doubt they use hyydr. oil or preservatives.

I was at TJ's today and they had marzipan stollen.

Don't bother. I tried it last year--it's dreadful.

It's not that it's dreadful, it's that it isn't actually Stollen.

The Junket in El Cerrito had about seven different types of stollen imported from various places. I had a gathering where I needed to bring dessert so I did a stollen sampling.
To tell you the truth I can't tell the difference between a butter stollen and a marzipan stollen. I posted my experince on the general board.
I would say for an excellent preservative free, top-line, stollen, go to Michale Misher in Oakland. Don't know it is a marzipan version but it is truly fine.
There's a local German Baker that is selling Christmas stollen at Urban Harvest on 8th St in SF. Don't know the version.
I'd check out the Tuesday Farmers market in Crockett Galeria that has a Esthers German bakery selling there. There's a German baker at the Saturday Oakland Grand Lake farmers market, so you might check that out.
Also, Redwood city has a German Deli and it is my understanding that they do some baking of their own
Can't tell you if any of these sells marzipan stollen, but they might be worth looking into.

Found it.
Direct from Dresden and not a preservative on the label, marzipan clearly identified. It's in a tin and $18. They had the two better stollens that The Junket carries ... at higher prices. For one, it was only a dollar more, the other was almost twice the price at The Junket.

thanks! Anything like this (w/marzipan, w/ no preservatives) in the city by any chance?

An exceptionally good Stollen you will find at Harvest Urban Market on 8th Street made by a new local German bakery, Sterntaler Bakery. It is by far the best Stollen I have ever had - even better than some in Germany. Try it!
