Best veggie burger
Hello Chowhounders,
Which vegetarian cookbook or barbecue cookbook has the best recipes for veggie burgers? The summer will provide much time to get acquainted with the grill, I want to take advantage of that with some meat-free yumminess.

I must say, Dr. Praeger's Tex Mex veggie patties at Trader Joe's are quite good. In the absence of time, I haven't yet ventured into the realm of self-made patties, so those will do for now... and they do really well.

Ooh! I second Dr. Praeger's!

Be careful with veggie burgers on the bbq. A lot of recipes create patties that are safe in a fry pan but will crumble and fall through a grill. I've been looking for years for a great veggie burger and I still don't have a recipe I can recommend but let me steer you away from a very bad recipe: Alton Brown's veggie burger from Good Eats. It's a mess. Green split peas make for a burger with an unpleasant sweetness (like a Big Mac with too much secret sauce) and the brown rice never really blended into the patty. As I said I don't have a great veggie burger recipe yet but when I do, I suspect it will be based on brown lentils and bulgar.

Oh my goodness, this reminds me of one of my most embarrassing private kitchen disasters that I would only admit to here, anonymously... I don't have a toaster oven, just a toaster, and I was too tired to get out the pan and cook up a Dr. Praegers.... so I popped the frozen disc into my toaster like a poptart. Let your imagination fill in the rest.
So yeah, maybe a barbecue grill isn't the best place for a veggie burger....

I've done veggie burgers on the grill, but always on a piece of foil...The frozen ones from TJs, etc, just need to be heated...Its the only way I know to keep them in one piece!

I've never made these recipes but I'm gong to try the jalapeño red bean burgers this weekend. http://www.epicurious.com/bonappetit/...
At some point during this exercise I will probably be glaring at ash covered gloopy lumps of 'burger' as they slip through the grate but I'm going to give it a whirl.

I recommend Dr. Praeger's also. They sell them at Costco. For awhile they did not sell them, I forgot why, but they are back. I don't think they would work on the grill. I know Cooks Illustrated did a recipe for veggie burgers that looked interesting, I have never tired them, but......

i like isa moskowitz' veggie burger recipe with mushrooms in "vegan with a vengeance." when making my own veggie burgers and expecting them to hold together on a grill i like to make use of a patty press-- they sell expensive ones at williams sonoma & crate & barrel, but you can get a cheap tupperware one. you could improvise with an empty can and a smaller, flat lid. freeze or partially freeze the patty before grilling also, and the tinfoil works as a good safety net as well.
