2nd Hand Repost on Cassis, Honolulu

Husband had lunch there yesterday (I'm home in SoCal with the kid & the dog...). Said the space is huge, as it's in the old Palamino & not the intimacy or individualized attention like at Mavro's. Three of them had the Chicken Tsatsiki & said it was virtually inedible. Dried out chicken & pita, nasty runny tsatsiki - not a dish they'd recommend to anyone. One had the grouper & did like it. They commented on the way out that they should take the off the menu & no one offered to do anything about their poor meal. In Cassis's defense, I don't think they asked for them to do anything, just made a comment on the way out.

Would like to hear from any other CH's if they've been, as I was hoping to eat there this summer.

Oops - Title should read 'Report' - can't figure out a way to change that!

  1. I'm hoping to try it when I'm in Honolulu next month.

Hopefully it's just recent opening jitters.

    1. Unfortunately, your husband's experience tracks pretty closely with the feedback I've been getting from people who've dined there. Did he didn't mention any service issues other than the failure to respond to the comment on the poor dish? The overall buzz is not tracking well for Cassis at this point.

FYI, the first 'official' review of Cassis is more hopeful. http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/app...

I had a lunch that let me say "I've been there" and just about everything we at was
bland and non-descript. The bright room only enhanced the colorless food which was
relatively flavorless despite fine ingredients excpet the mushroom risotto. The risotto was perfection from start to finish, the mushrooms crackled with flavor and the rice just perfect to the teeth, a lovely item. There were 3 of us and without alcohol the bill was over $100.00. We sat and watched another table wait 1/2 an hour for any food to come to their table and ours took over 45 minutes, everything came at once which we did not request. I thought the bread lacking luster and I am a bread nut. Our waiter was extremely hard to understand with an accent that no one could place, his intentions were good and he was polite and pleasant. I just read the review and agree with what I only saw but didn't eat about the frites, that
dish lacked any sort of creative appearance and given the price none of us wanted to order. About this lunch my dear mother would say "Holy Smokes! Lunches of the RICH!" and indeed it was but not rich in flavor. I imagine that they will take a while to get the ball rolling down the lane but at the prices for lunch alone it would take a gift certificate to get me back. The decor is atrocious as well, what on earth are those giant discs hanging from the ceiling? Were they mirrored they could stand in for an infrared scope atop Mauna Kea.

Interesting article - thanks. Since it'll be a few months, before we get back to the Islands, I hope that the necessary work will have been done, by then. I'll definitely go, and try and keep an open mind.

            Reviews appreciated,
            Hunt

        2. Went for pupus and was very disappointed. Flambe pancake was cold an greasy, as if it had been sitting around in the kitchen waiting for someone to order it. Little pizza was tasty but nothing you couldn't get at Wolgang Puck's Express, and way overpriced. Pouch of goat cheese was excellent. Overall, one out three dishes were worthy of the Mavro name, which isn't a passing grade.
