Completely Ridiculous Deals at Ray's the Classics

Dinner in the bar area tonight --

-- any soup or salad you wish -- which includes reamarkably good crab bisque and/or onion soup

-- 14 ounces of hand-chopped prime aged steak served smothered in mushroom, bacon and onion gravy, seared with a cracked black peppercorn crust and port-peppercorn cream and blackened with cajun spices and topped with sauteed garlic (Michael Landrum came out of the kitchen raving that this was the best steak he serves; he's rightly very excited about it)

-- tons of mashed Potatoes, creamed spinach and grilled red onions

-- any dessert of your choosing (such as the Key Lime Pie I got)

-- and all the spiced cashews you can eat

for the grand total of . . .

fifteen dollars.

Yup -- 15. One-five.

And there's an even better deal (albeit for $22) for hanger steak, too. (And a salmon special that sounds very enticing -- if you are not a mammal consumer.)

That's fairly insane. Just go.

    1. Below is the announcement, though Marty L may have received the Key Lime Pie because of his celebrity status....even without the dessert it sounds awesome, and I can certainly vouch for the crab bisque being amazing.

-Seared With a Cracked Black Peppercorn Crust and Port-Peppercorn Cream
-Blackened with Cajun Spices and Topped with Sauteed Garlic
Add Aged Bleu Cheese Crumbles or Sauteed Mushrooms $1.00

      1. Had the steak salad this evening -- $14.95 for an *enormous* platter of New York Strip Sirloin with sautéed mushrooms, grilled onions, blue cheese, tomatoes, greens and balsamic. Absurd.

The $22 hanger-steak special, btw, is a $6 appetizer (any soup or salad, including the luscious crab bisque), any $6 dessert, *and* the hanger steak. And prodigious amounts of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. And bread and olive oil. And unlimited spiced cashews. All for $22.

That's the bar section at RtC -- Monday through Friday only. Not to be missed.

        1. re: MartyL

TUESDAY through Friday. They remain closed on Sundays and Mondays.

The bar menu isn't available at lunch, and in case it wasn't clear, this is ONLY if you eat at the bar or one of the bar tables. This deal is NOT available in the dining room, and the special items like the bacon and chopped steak don't even appear on the dining room menu.

There is no stated ending date on the bar menu, but that's not to say it couldn't change or disappear at any time.

        2. WOW!! That sounds wonderful. I haven't been to this well-reviewed restaurant yet...don't get out to Silver Spring that often...but this might be reason enough.

Is there a time limit for this?

          1. re: Elyssa

We went last night to the bar and had the chopped steak special (with peppercorn crust and sauce). OMG! Unbelieveable. Ray himself was (a) answering phones, (b) greeting guests at the door, (c) tending to the bar, (d) waitering at both the bar (which was full of eaters) and regular restaurant (along with the bartender and hostess, who themselves were running all over the place). All with a smile on his face. Ray volunteers that the chopped steak is the "best item on the menu." He may be right, but the man shouldn't be touting a meal that he surely is losing money on! I felt guilty eating so well for so little. (My only quibble is that the chopped steaks, which had wonderful blackened crusts, were both rarer than requested -- but we didn't bother sending back because we saved the rarer parts for our doggie bag.)

            1. re: Marissa

Do you mean Michael? I wasn't aware of anyone actually named Ray involved in the day to day operations...

              1. re: Marissa

By "Ray" do you mean Michael Landrum? :)

                1. re: Lowbar

Yeah, we said are you "Ray" and he said yes -- but it's the same guy as in the picture from the review on the front desk.
