Splurge dinner (boss is paying)
My husband ended the fiscal year as a hero. His boss told him to take me to dinner & splurge. I'm all open for ideas. We are not into french food...have been to Babbo many times & love it, but are looking for a different place this time...love March but know it's closed...went to Daniel once & we loved it. We enjoy tasting menus paired with wine. Ok, Chowhouds...please chime in with where you would go if your boss gave you the same offer.
TIA

You say you're not into French food but loved Daniel? Hmmm.... So, does that mean Eleven Madison Park is out? Chef Daniel Humm's cuisine is French-inspired but not classic French. (Not that Daniel is classic French either.) EMP is taking something of a beating on the overrated thread, but it's still my first pick for a sensational tasting dinner with wine pairings.

I would recommend Del Posto...they offer two different tasting menus on is 5 course and one is 7 courses with that you can add wine pairings....and the restaurant is beautiful inside!

What about Veritas?

Excellent, of course, but they don't offer a tasting menu.

What about Toqueville?

Cru- tasting menu with wine

I second Cru, tasting with wine. If you're into pairings you will love it.

I haven't managed to get to Cru yet. However, when you say "never heard a bad word," I think your memory fails here. When Cru first opened, the desserts got such overwhelmingly negative reviews that the pastry chef left. Also, there have been negative opinions about the decor. As regards Shea Galante's cuisine, granted, most reviews have been favorable. But I know I've read an occasional report which found the food disappointing.

Maybe a little less fancy than Daniel and some of the other suggestions but i always love Gotham and David Burke

If you like Japanese you can go to Masa.

i know its technically french, but about as much as daniel, and the food is superb...try bouley! it doesnt get much lovelier or more celebratory.

Daniel is French. But it's contemporary rather than classic French. I've not been to Bouley, but I think it's also considered contemporary French.
Restaurants in NYC serving classic haute French cuisine are nearly extinct. The only two I can think of are La Grenouille and Le Perigord.

My choices for a splurge dinner are: Aureole, Bouley, Danube and Eleven Madison Park. All have great food, service, decor and wine lists. My first choice is Aureole (I'm going there after I "close" on my apartment). Enjoy!

Per Se or Danube

Thanks everyone for you suggestions. And yes, I don't consider Daniel "classic french" and so the confusion in what I said in the original post. I'll let you know which we end up going to.

If you like contemporary French, then a slurge at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon at Four Seasons will be a great option! Have as much foie gras and kobe beef as you like!

I think I've narrowed it down to either Cru or Bouley...any opinions?

$$$ is no object?
Cafe des Artistes

I strongly disagree about Cafe des Artistes. While it may have been a top restaurant at one time, that is no longer the case. Two words: Mediocre food!

Bouley without any hesitation.

Ok, I decided...Bouley, and can't wait. The White Room or the Red Room?

red

The White Room is my favorite. It is more intimate and you will feel very well looked-after since there are fewer tables. I'm going to Bouley this weekend, and it's my favorite.

Cost no object? Go for Per Se...might as well do it on someone else's dime. Because with alcohol tip and tax it can easily run over 500 a person

Tasting menu at Per Se (if you can get a reservation)
Tasting menu at Gramercy Tavern is also lovely

There's always MASA

Isn't Bouley French??
Not really. I've always considered it more "continental".
