Karl's Sausage Kitchen
The post below about Austrian food reminded me of this German fleisch haus in Saugus.
It'll be my first time going. Anything I absolutely *MUST* get, especially things that are unlikely to be found elsewhere?

A few of my favorites at Karl's are the white bratwurst and the rostbratwurst.
They also make a great hotdog if your into them.
Smoked pork chops, smoked bacon, maybe some black forest ham might make you happy.
Absolute MUST for me is the Gelbwurst.
Looks like it might be time for me to make a Karl's run too.

Understand that KSC frankfurters are not NY-kosher style dogs; they are mild porky sausages. Folks who only like NY-kosher style dogs would probably not like them.
The smoked pork chops are sublime.

I assume these do not require any additional cooking?
How do you suggest they be eaten?
I'm SO looking forward to trying all these things.

My husband, who is German, loves to go there and just get a variety of cold cuts. We tend to get 1/4 LB samplings of all the different cuts and just make a variety of sandwiches. The cheeses are also very good.

The Schwarzwald Schinken (Black Forest Ham) sliced thin is really outstanding - I like it better than prosciutto because it's been smoked. The other hams are good as well. The leberwurst comes in course and fine grind. The landjaeger are great snacks - if they run out of the ones on the hooks up front, they always have frozen ones in the back. They get fresh brochen delivered on Fridays, which are usually available through Saturday - but they freeze them so you can get them frozen any time.

Anyone know if they make frikadelle? That's the sausage my German grandmother (father's side) always made when I was a little kid.
The sausages my Irish grandmother made are readily available all over Boston, but I miss those succulent frikadelles!

I've also been to Adolf's in Hartford area. Years ago my father would drive down for big Octoberfest Parties for the family. We grew up in W. Springfield so it wasn't much of a drive. I think 40 minutes? I would ask Karls how to make Tapelfspitz, that's a real Austrian dish! Bratwursts are just like a hamburg for us Americans. Some of these other ones seem to be a little to Germanic for a fine Austrian Fraulein.

Was Adolf's the place in West Hartford, right on the main drag in their downtown area? I ate there a few times with my mom, but it's been gone for years, replaced by a mediocre Mexican restaurant.

This time of year you can stock up on German Easter candy. They have these little squares of milk chocolate I just love- I think it's a hazelnut flavor.
