Super Bowl Food Ideas?
I am no football fan, but I somehow got roped into hosting some friends on Super Bowl Sunday. Was not thinking about doing a full dinner - probably just some heavy apps. Does anyone have any ideas or recipes that they want to share? Thanks in advance!

The Buffalo Chicken Dip that has been posted here and on other site is a big hit for Super Bowl parties and easier and less messy than Buffalo Wings. I do highly recommend Fritos Scoops to serve with it.

2nd this rec. Everyone loves this dip. I actually recommend it with tostitos scoops instead, as well as celery and carrot sticks for dipping.

By no means, new, innovative or gourmet, but the most popular finger food at my parties is always Pigs in a Blanket. They go in seconds!

Along with various other snacks, we have fondues on Super Bowl Sunday. Usually a couple of different cheese fondues and a chocolate one. So, so good and easy, too.
This year I may add to the table the potato recipe Candy just posted.
Love scrapple's idea to go with the food from the cities involved.
Around here we're rooting for Da Bears! Maybe I should add some beefs and saahsauges to the menu. Would go well wit da beerss.

I like finger type foods.
BBQ Ribs with jerk rub

Steak Wraps with chimichurri sauce
Crab Legs
Italian Beef or Sausage
Buffalo wings

I hosted a superbowl party last year and made chili (served with corn bread) and turkey meatballs (served with a marniara sauce)...and all were a bit hit.

I agree about the Buffalo Chicken. Delicious. I think it was posted as Bonnies Chicken. I am from the Boston area, so amything I eat will be washed down with tears, as my Pats are not ther, But, be that as it may, I usually include stuffed mushrooms, pizza, cut into bite sized pieces, a few dips( we love spinach artichoke). Last year I made some coconut shrimp, whiich everybody loved. Still looking for a great plum sauce to serrve with it.
WE also like what we call "summer nachos", as they require no cooking. On a large plate, layer some sour cream. Top with chopped scallions, peppers, cilantro, jalaponos and salsa. Topo that with shredded montery jack cheese. Serve with chips on the side. This is a great dish, becaause you can tailor it to your liking- adding or leaving out ingredients as you like.

Yes, it's Bonnie's Buffalo Chicken Dip, that's the name. Is the search function working? If not, I'll post the recipe.

Well I too was "roped" and I think I'll do a repeat of an idea that I did a few years ago.
I'll make a huge pot of red chili with beans and another one with white chili. I'll serve, Casper hotdogs from Costco (crunchy skins) Italian sausage, Chicken Sausages, Italian Sausages, and Louisiana Hots. Serve it with tons of condiments, relish, onions, hot sauces, tomatoes, cheeses, pickled jalapenos and whatever else seems to work.
I'll also have a few salads, pasta, tossed green and coleslaw.
I'll ask everyone to bring a favorite imported 6 pack of beer to share and exchange for people to try. Put a piece of butcher paper out for comments on the beer tastings.
I think this is easier than appetizers, I did those for Christmas and it was challenging to prepare for a large group. Even with 2 refrigerators, and two ovens. My head was in and out of the oven that night!

You could do a baked potato bar, with some chili, cheese, veggies, gravy, etc.

OOH- I like this idea. I usually have drop ins for Sunday dinner every week, and am always looking for ideas to easily feed a crowd. This Sunday I think I will roast a few chickens, and have a baked potato bar. I also have some purple, orange and white cauliflower. Will have to find something interesting to do with that! Thanks.

No prob. You can bake a couple sweet potatoes too, if your friends are fans.
Love sweet potatoes. But the ones I have at home are really large ( I think I have three). Maybe I will have a baked potato bar with white potatoes, and then bake the weet potatoes. I like to then add S/P, butter and the tiniest bit of maple syrup. Then I like to use the immersion blender. Looks like baby food, but they are really good this way. May keep everyone happy this way. I prefer the swett potatoes.

I love baked sweet potatoes filled with savory options....black bean salsa, goat cheese or feta cheese, etc. So you could still have them baked, depending on what your available toppings are.
That does sound good. But the sweet potatoes I have are really big- more conducive to mashing or blending than being served in individual portions. But I like the idea of a ban salsa.
That's what I do, too. My favourite toppings so far are daal and saag paneer.

We used to host a superbowl chilifest every year. We would make 2 or 3 different chilis, and then invite 2 or 3 other people to contribute a chili. We always had a great range of chilis, and needed very few other dishes because everyone filled up trying the different chilis. Just keep the cornbread coming out of the oven!

I'm so glad this thread is here! I'm definitely doing wings, or my guests (who love my wings) would revolt, though I'm thinking of making them a little earlier in the day and leaving them in a warmish oven in the sauce to keep warm, any ideas on whether this would work? I've also been thinking about doing pigs in a blanket, because I love them...last year I did a Muffeletta and then cut it into wedges, and everyone loved it. Any idea for a good warm cheesy dip that uses real cheese?

I always take a warm crab dip to football parties and it iusually is a big hit. I don't really have a recipe. Mix cream cheese, a little mayo, a little white cheddar, some white wine if you have it handy or lemon juice, some old bay, texas pete, chooped scallions and a pound of good crab meat. Bake in the oven until warm and bubbly. I like to serve it with the big fritos.
Also I make fancy pigs in a blanket with different sausages rolled in puff pastry and they always immediately disappear. The good thing about them is you can assemble them earlier and just bake when ready.

Jumbo shrimp, and make the coctail sauce a little more spicy.huge hit on new years.Down fall $$$ pricey.Everyone seems to be doing taco type dips these days.Have had some real good ones at some parties. Can't help w/ recipie sorry. My buddy Larry's favorite and is seen at every gathering"burbon weenies".Little smokies or mini hot dogs, bbq sauce, grape jelly, and booze.Don't know amounts of each, heat in crock pot. It's a winner even if your team loses.

It's so terribly trite, but the most popular food I serve at parties (and would be GREAT for the Super Bowl) are my Devilled Eggs! The secret is to use ungodly amounts of Best Foods (aka, Hellman's) mayo and whip the hardboiled yolks with the mayo and fresh cracked pepper using a handheld or stand mixer until the consistency is so smooth, you could mistake it for frosting! Then, I pipe it into the hard-boiled egg white halves using a ziplock bag with the corner cut off. Top with paprika (and fresh chopped green onions or chives!) and enjoy!
For a twist, forego the paprika and chives, and instead add lots of curry powder to the yolks while they're being whipped, then top the finished eggs with drunken raisins that have been plumped in brandy!

Love dried mustard in deviled eggs. Alway have to make deviled eggs for family gatherings, as all of my brothers are crazy about them.

One of the big hits at my annual Super Bowl Party is Seven Layer Dip. Somehow Mexican food and football seem to go hand-in-hand (I think it's a Colorado thing).
Take a Pyrex rectangular casserole dish and layer the following items in the following order (this can be changed up as per your personal taste):
Refried beans (not heated)
Guacamole
Sour Cream
Salsa
Shredded Cheddar
Chopped Lettuce
Chopped Black Olives
Serve with a big bowl of thick tortilla chips.
Yum.

I love to make a huge pot of New England Clam Chowder- it is usually gone well before 1/2 time show.

How about a variety of sandwiches cut into quarters or other manageable pieces? 2 favorites...really good thinly sliced roast beef with rosemary mayo (soak some finely chopped rosemary in a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, then mix with good mayo); egg salad with pesto.

Any other foods particular to Indianapolis that could be served? Competing dishes from each city seems like a great idea...

Pigs in the blanket are a mainstay st Jfood's Super Bowl. And not the frozen stuff. To keep it simple I do not make the dough. I make half with frozen puff pastry and the other half with Corn dough in the refrigerator section. I buy both Hebrew National and Boars Head mini dogs. Make them in the morning and into the spare fridge covered with wrap. Into the oven 350-400 for about 30 minutes. I have a slew of different mustards available.
Another touch this year since the Bears are there are the following web site:

How do you do the ones with the corn dough? Do you mean cornbread dough, or is there something else?

I always serve the same Super Bowl menu every year, and there would be a rebellion at our house if I ever changed it! *Super Bowl Salad* is super yummy and easy. Slice up two or three large bunches of ripe bananas into a large bowl. Add a half a bag or so of shredded coconut, a couple of cups of chopped walnuts, two or three boxes of drained frozen strawberries and a carton of extra-rich frozen whipped topping (to which I add a drop or two of red food coloring, which produces a lovely, pink-colored salad). I always dress the top of the salad with a few extra berries, some nuts and coconut. Had this at a Nevada casino's private New Year's party for high rollers some 25-plus years ago and have been serving it ever since. It is simply delicious, non-filling and very colorful.
The day before the party, I also buy about five pounds of chicken wings and slice off the wing tips and divide the other two wing sections to make two pieces from each wing. Then the night before the game, I do the following:
In a large bowl, mix low-sodium soy sauce with some ground ginger, garlic granules, some sugar (or Splenda) and a splash of dry, white wine. Pour the teriyaki mixture into a large oven-proof bag and add the chicken wings. Seal the bag, place it in a large baking pan and store it all in the refrigerator overnight. Turn the bag over occasionally as the chicken marinates. About an hour and a half before serving time, pop the wings (bag, teriyaki sauce and all) into a 350-degree pre-heated oven and bake one hour and fifteen minutes. Super easy and very little cleanup! Everything else I serve is finger-food....the usual veggies and dips, crusty breads, cheeses and cheese spreads, olives, etc.

This is really not healthy but I sweat it gets eaten so fast that you can't keep the crockpot full.
you take about 4 blocks of cream cheese, and 4 cans of chili- no beans, and let it simmer. Use tortilla chips to dip into it. It is really tasty but not the most healthy dip. Super easy though.

I posted this before but its easy and good. Half jalepenos lengthwise, scoop out seeds, fill with shredded cheddar and cream cheese, wrap in bacon, 350 til crisp.

Can you use something other then a crockpot for that dip? Def. making those jalepenos! :)

We are a much more "artsy" than "sporty" bunch, but never miss the opportunity for a themed meal! :)
In honour of Superbowl, we make guacamole, oven nachos, jalapeno cornbread, Hell's Kitchen chili, smoked pork ribs with a southern rub and a wet sauce (my FIL smokes them for hours - heaven!), and baked beans. Though, we may have to try the Buffalo Chicken dip and stuffed jalapenos, too, this year...they sound killer!

I would love if you could you post your oven nachos recipe???

I took this from a fellow poster but felt it needed repeating, such a great idea
Last year I made mini bacon cheeseburgers. I used fresh ground chuck, slab bacon, grated Cabot habanero cheddar cheese and put them in sliced potato dinner rolls spread with a thin layer of ranch dressing mixed with a little Frank's Red Hot. The patties were about the size of a silver dollar and maybe 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick. I made roughly two dozen and they were gone 10 minutes after I pulled them from the grill.
This year I am thinking about adding some grilled onions and thinly sliced dill pickle

Baby burgers, sooo good.... I dont know if this is the same bread but we used hawaiian bread rolls, they are fluffy little sqaures perfect for this.

Stuffed Breads are quick & easy!
Roll out your pizza dough and fill with meat, cheese, fried eggplant, roasted veggies, deli meats, fold length wise, seal edges and bake until golden brown.
Let 'em rest on the counter a few mins, slice & serve.
