Corn oil?

What are your opinions, qualified and unqualified?

After visiting my grandmother -who is the healthiest cook I have ever met -but must now limit her "green vegetable" intake b/c she's on coumadin - I found I really liked the taste of the corn oil she was using. She switched from canola to corn b/c she felt the canola was affecting her as a vegetable oil.

Point is - I bought a large container of corn oil but now see from reading online that it's not the best healthwise. Should I toss it?

  1. In moderation, it's probably not a problem but it's high in omega 6 fatty acids which Americans tend to get too much of. Plus, this is an issue for me, but not for everyone, unless it's organic, it's probably made with genetically modified corn.

    1. I only use EVOO for cooking and the very few occassions that I fry, I use canola oil.

Don't toss it...donate it to someone or a homeless shelter.

      1. Corn oil is fine -- it's just a victim of the evil (j/k) Canola oil lobby (and I don't know if Canola is actually genetically modified, but it has certainly been "bred" to be what it is). Maybe you shouldn't use it exclusively, but there's no reason not to use it. I use a variety of different oils for various purposes, and corn oil is one of them (canola oil is not).

As you discovered, corn oil tastes much better than canola oil. I think the flavor goes well with some foods and dishes. I've never understood this passion for putting EVOO on everything -- while I like EVOO, I don't want everything I make to taste the same!

Canola oil is also genetically modified.

In moderation, everything is fine--the only one I completely avoid (or make a concerted effort to avoid) are partially hydrogenated oils.

Thanks, although the fact that they love Canola oil and bashed corn oil makes me a little dubious. But you're right of course: everything in moderation.

I've been using grapeseed oil lately when I want a neutral flavored oil. It has a high smoke point, so it's good for sauteeing, and it has a very light, clean quality.

        2. I like using corn oil when preparing Mexican dishes.

          1. The main and major genetic modification in industrial crops is the inclusion of the Bt gene. The result is less pesticide use. Not a bad thing in my book.
