Fabulous Sour Cream Cookies

I just had to share this recipe. I think it was created by my grandmother, and she taught my mother, who somehow never showed me. Mom's been gone for 6 years now, and my brother and I were thinking the recipe was lost forever, when it turned out that, miracle of miracles, his ex-wife has a copy, although she'd never made them. She sent me the recipe, I made them today, and stepped back in time 40 years! So here you are: Grandma Schuman's Sour Cream Cookies:

Mix together 1/2 lb softened butter and 1 8-oz carton of sour cream. Add enough flour to make a stiff dough (I'm guessing 4-5 cups). I used my Kitchenaid stand mixer to do this part.

Work with 1/4 of the dough at the time. Pat it into a ball and roll out on a well-floured board until very thin. Sprinkle generously with sugar, fold over and roll again. Repeat for at least 3 folds, rolling as thin as possible each time.

Sprinkle sugar on top and cut into strips. Put strips on an ungreased cookie sheet and cut crosswise into squares. Bake at 350 about 20 minutes, until crisp and lightly browned.

Mom always made these very small - about 1/2 inch to a side - and my dad would eat them by the handful.

Enjoy and let me know how they turn out.

    1. I just made these! Thanks for sharing your family recipe. I was a bit stingy with the sugar since my family doesn't like things too sweet, but they are neat little treats.
