Do any restaurants have real maple syrup??
I have the unique situation of having a mom with a cousin in the Canadian maple syrup business, so I was raised on the stuff with my pancakes and waffles. Thus, I am spoiled and I tend to avoid pancakes etc. out because the syrup they serve regrettably doesn't do it for me. Out of curiosity, anyone been to a breakfast place that serves real maple syrup?

bld definitely has it.

what about CJ's or Nicks?

FYI, John o' Groats makes you pay extra for real maple syrup. Kind of a drag.

True, but at least they offer it! I guess most folks don't care as long as there is a sweet syrup. I care and am willing to pay them an extra charge. I suppose that they could raise all the prices a bit and just offer the real stuff.

i feel the same way about places that charge extra for egg whites in an omlette. seems kind of arbitrary.

That one I understand, at least... in order to have the same size omelette with egg whites, you need to use more eggs, which costs more money. If the omelette were smaller, people would whine.

ah, touche.
also, it takes more time (labor cost) to separate out the whites.

I suppose, if one went that way. Most restaraunts buy cartons of pre-seperated egg whites
Heck, you can buy it yourself. Look for "Eggology" at Whole foods or Gelson's. All it is is a jar of egg whites.

...which is still more expensive than the equivalent amount of eggs.

thank you for clearing up the obvious :-)
eggs sure are cheap, are they not though, relatively speaking!
True.
But a lot easier to use than sitting there and seperating it out. This saving on worker hours and pay.
You just pour it, bloop!

I see nothing wrong in a restaurant charging extra for the real thing -- it's quite expensive. For people who don't care, the cheap stuff is fine. If you have a taste for real maple, you should be willing to cough up a bit more cash.

Try Maniis on Fairfax, near Fifth. They used to have a good breakfast with pancakes. They have good pastries sweetened with fruit juices, etc.

at coogie's you can request it, and pay extra for it

Marston's in Pasadena uses it -- albeit from Vermont and not Canada.

well in that case... just kidding. i've been meaning to go to marston's for breakfast and this now makes me want to go X100

Once, I bought a little thing of it from trader Joes, put it in a squeezy bottle, snuck it in my purse to John O' Groats to avoid paying for the real stuff. I'm sure there's a spot in Hell reserved for me for that...

I've done that too but not at John O' Groats. I've done it at places where my lads and I like the pancakes, waffles and French toast but only offer the fake stuff such as The Pines Cafe and Dish Restaurant. I did discuss the idea of offering real maple syrup with the manager at Dish but he was adamant in his position that there was no way that they could offer it, even with an extra charge!

I wonder if they charge a corkage fee ... ;)

Ocean Diner in Hermosa Beach....Aviation and Ocean. They have awesome coffee from Java Man...same owner. They offer, for an extra charge, real maple syrup.

Eat Well in Silverlake has it. Charges extra though

The Fountain at the Beverly Hills Hotel definitely has it to go along with their sublime waffles. Oh, the joy!

BLD on Beverly. Unless the patron brought her own, they serve the real stuff in the little metal tin shaped like a cabin.

Russell's in Pasadena but it is an up charge and Julienne's in San Marino. But at Julienne's, who needs maple syrup if you are ordering creme brule or bread pudding french toast?!

I am still thinking . . .
You must be kidding, right?

Kidding? About what?

who needs maple syrup . . .
isn't that the whole point of this thread
maybe i'm just slow sorry

It is hard to infer tone in a missive but do I detect a bit of sarcastic reproach? I was only referring to the 2 dishes specifically, not discounting the need for maple syrup in general and Julienne's does indeed have many dishes that it would be appropriate for. BTY, I readmany threads that meander. I'm sorry if you disapprove.

Sorry. My comment had nothing to do with meandering. Not sure why that is said, and I'm not the best communicator. And I am sure this sounds stupid, but I have NO idea what a missive is but I'm moving on nonetheless.

Most of the *** Vegan places have it, though some don't serve it by default. Green Leaves Vegan or whatever the one on Hillhurst is called now lied to me about it once ("yeah... it's real maple syrup - just a low grade one"); now they have a special charge for "organic maple syrup" ($1.50 or something) for the real stuff. For that, you get a little container of it - I watched them pour it out and it's not even certified organic maple syrup - just Kirkland maple syrup from Costco. But at least it's real.
I had a German roommate once who claimed there was no difference between real maple syrup and Aunt Jemima type syrup. Somehow, she still always used up my real maple syrup anyway.

Please, I can tell the difference between Aunt Jemima and real maple syrup from ten metres away. Obviously your roommate was not a chowhound.
I have been known to take the real stuff (my uncle owns a sugar bush in Maine so I tend to get a gallon carton of it a year) when I'm forced to eat in places like IHOP or Carrows.

Millie's on Sunset will bring you maple syrup. You have to ask and there's an added charge.

Axe in Venice has maple syrup. It comes with the 9 grain pancake at no extra charge. It's quite tasty. You can ask for berries (when available) to be added to the batter to make even more yummy.

Martson's in Pasadena, but I cannot recommend the place after having some awful service there for breakfast recently

Julienne has 3 French Toasts on their regular menu. One is a standard but really yummy version, my favorite is their Creme Brulee French Toast and I don't recall what the third one was (maybe it has berries, it's been a while) but all are really good!

I horde the little glass containers of pure maple syrup that come with room service at Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, etc. for the purpose of avoiding bad restaurant maple-flavored corn syrup.
