Do any restaurants have real maple syrup??
I have the unique situation of having a mom with a cousin in the Canadian maple syrup business, so I was raised on the stuff with my pancakes and waffles. Thus, I am spoiled and I tend to avoid pancakes etc. out because the syrup they serve regrettably doesn't do it for me. Out of curiosity, anyone been to a breakfast place that serves real maple syrup?

no they dont dude. i was there last week, asked the hostess and our server. the server asked the owner (adam, i think his name is). they don't have it.

Square One Dining in Los Feliz. Although they also have bacon caramel sauce for pancakes, so it might be a hard choice.

True, but at least they offer it! I guess most folks don't care as long as there is a sweet syrup. I care and am willing to pay them an extra charge. I suppose that they could raise all the prices a bit and just offer the real stuff.

i feel the same way about places that charge extra for egg whites in an omlette. seems kind of arbitrary.

That one I understand, at least... in order to have the same size omelette with egg whites, you need to use more eggs, which costs more money. If the omelette were smaller, people would whine.

Heck, you can buy it yourself. Look for "Eggology" at Whole foods or Gelson's. All it is is a jar of egg whites.

I see nothing wrong in a restaurant charging extra for the real thing -- it's quite expensive. For people who don't care, the cheap stuff is fine. If you have a taste for real maple, you should be willing to cough up a bit more cash.

Try Maniis on Fairfax, near Fifth. They used to have a good breakfast with pancakes. They have good pastries sweetened with fruit juices, etc.

Once, I bought a little thing of it from trader Joes, put it in a squeezy bottle, snuck it in my purse to John O' Groats to avoid paying for the real stuff. I'm sure there's a spot in Hell reserved for me for that...

I've done that too but not at John O' Groats. I've done it at places where my lads and I like the pancakes, waffles and French toast but only offer the fake stuff such as The Pines Cafe and Dish Restaurant. I did discuss the idea of offering real maple syrup with the manager at Dish but he was adamant in his position that there was no way that they could offer it, even with an extra charge!

Ocean Diner in Hermosa Beach....Aviation and Ocean. They have awesome coffee from Java Man...same owner. They offer, for an extra charge, real maple syrup.

It is hard to infer tone in a missive but do I detect a bit of sarcastic reproach? I was only referring to the 2 dishes specifically, not discounting the need for maple syrup in general and Julienne's does indeed have many dishes that it would be appropriate for. Most of the *** Vegan places have it, though some don't serve it by default. Green Leaves Vegan or whatever the one on Hillhurst is called now lied to me about it once ("yeah... it's real maple syrup - just a low grade one"); now they have a special charge for "organic maple syrup" ($1.50 or something) for the real stuff. For that, you get a little container of it - I watched them pour it out and it's not even certified organic maple syrup - just Kirkland maple syrup from Costco. But at least it's real.
I had a German roommate once who claimed there was no difference between real maple syrup and Aunt Jemima type syrup. Somehow, she still always used up my real maple syrup anyway.

I have been known to take the real stuff (my uncle owns a sugar bush in Maine so I tend to get a gallon carton of it a year) when I'm forced to eat in places like IHOP or Carrows.

Axe in Venice has maple syrup. It comes with the 9 grain pancake at no extra charge. It's quite tasty. You can ask for berries (when available) to be added to the batter to make even more yummy.

Julienne has 3 French Toasts on their regular menu. One is a standard but really yummy version, my favorite is their Creme Brulee French Toast and I don't recall what the third one was (maybe it has berries, it's been a while) but all are really good!

I horde the little glass containers of pure maple syrup that come with room service at Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, etc. for the purpose of avoiding bad restaurant maple-flavored corn syrup.
