Recipe for El Pollo Loco Smoky Barbecue Black Beans

My favorite side dish at El Pollo Loco was the smoky barbecue black beans and now they don't make them anymore. Or at least not in Southern California. Can anybody give me a recipe or pointers on how to make them at home.

  1. I don't have the recipe, but I'd suggest you check some Mexican cookbooks for recipes for Frijoles Borrachos or Frijoles a la Charra, which are different names for similar recipes for smokey beans. In my experience, the bean recipes from El Pollo Loco are pretty traditional (at least with regard to their pinto beans, which are straight-up "frijoles de olla" or beans from the pot.

What differs in the recipes for borrachos or charra beans, is the inclusion of bacon as a seasoner, among other things. I don't have an exact recipe, but it's pretty straightforward.

    1. I just spoke to someone at the corporate office of El Pollo Loco, and I was told that they will have black beans again starting in April 2007.
