Has anyone been to Shanghai Palace in South Scottsdale? I was perusing the menu, and I was shocked to see an old favorite from Chicago chinese restaurants- Onion pancake! Does anyone have any insight on this place, or tips as to where else I can find onion/scallion pancake?

Not a clue about Shanghai Palace, but if you cook, the scallion pancakes are not hard to make (although a little time-consuming as I recall) Ming Tsai's recipe is on the Food network site - search for scallion pancakes. The recipe has a ginger dipping sauce that's very good.

Forget the onion pancakes, I'm eager to try the xiao long bao! I didn't know there was a Shanghai-style place in Phoenix.
Just got back from the bay area and had excellent crab and pork xlb at HC Dumpling in Cupertino, a Shanghai-style spot with an orginal branch in LA, specializing in dumplings. Was lamenting that I hadn't come across xlb in Phienix. In fact, we did enjoy a green onion pancake there as well.... we had some wok-fried green beans and were instructed by the hostess to roll the green beans in the onion pancake which accompanied it.
Curious to see how this place stacks up, so if you get there before the rest of us please let us know what you think.

I think I ate here about a year ago. At least I think I ate at this location. Not sure if it was the same owner/chef - but it was an Asian restaurant in that corner shopping center and they did seem to market themselves as being pan-Asian (Chinese/Thai & Vietnamese.
I ate there for lunch on a weekday, so they offered a slightly different menu than on their site. It was mostly Chinese-American standards - the typical $6 lunch combo of the kung pao/broccoli beef variety, appealing to nearby office workers out for a quick lunch.
I do recall ordering a chicken dish, the recollection is not based on quality, but because of quantity The serving was massive. I'm usually happy to have a decent chinese meal with just enough for leftovers. They served me a platter that could have fed 6 people. I ate as much as I could, then filled (or more like stuffed) one of those big, square styrofoam "to go" boxes. I did make another meal of it, but still had more leftovers than a small village could eat.
That's how I remember the place, because if they served that much food for a lunch special, they'd surely go out of business. Maybe it was a fluke experience. Maybe the chef just got happy and made too much (I do that all the time at home).
Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to try it again. As mentioned, it wasn't bad. Just a ton of food and the lunch menu isn't as "ethnic" as one might expect.

I just ate there, tonight. It's in the same plaza as Sonic, on the SW corner of the intersection. I think I overheard somebody say that they've been there for two and a half years. My portion was plenty large. On the other side of Thomas is the HT Seafood Chinese Restaurant.

I had dinner at the Shanghai Palace, tonight.
I had combination D ($14.95) which came with two fried shrimp, one bbq pork rib, Sizzling Rice soup, ice cream, and one of ten entree choices. I picked the scallops with black bean sauce.
The soup came out first. It was a bowl sized portion. It was mostly broth with a few fresh vegetables, a shrimp, and a few small pieces of chicken.
Next was the small plate with the shrimp and pork rib. The shrimp could have come from Long John Silver's (that's a bad thing). The pork rib was big, drowned in a sweet sauce, dry, but edible.
The entree came out in a large dish, with a big bowl of steamed white rice. The rice was average, and the menu said fried rice. The scallops were very good, fresh and cooked to perfection. The black bean sauce was unremarkable, with a lot of fresh green bell pepper, onion, and mushroom.
I upgraded to the avocado ice cream ($1.50). They have a few homemade ice creams. This one had a very mild flavor, and a really nice texture.
Service was very attentive. The owner checked on me, twice. At least three other people waited on me, and they offered to box everything.
The atmosphere was just a little bit busy, but not loud or annoying. They had a TV on, dining room music, and some other audio happening.
Would I recommend Shanghai Palace? Why not? The food was mostly very fresh. No bold flavors, but nothing excessively sweet or salty, either. Next time, I'll probably have somebody order for me, and get better results. I'm still waiting to be dazzled by a Chinese restaurant in Phoenix.

Looking at the menu, it seems a little all over the place... how can any restaurant attempt Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese and expect to excel at any of them? From the posts here, it sounds like they do a couple of things really well but are maybe spread thin overall. Even though there are just a few Shanghainese things on the menu, given the name of the place I'm hoping the xiao long dumplings are one of them... cause I happen to love those - anyone every try them here?

After going to Chino Bandido, I don't bat an eyelash at multi-ethnic eateries. Chinese, Mexican, and Caribbean... on the same plate. You haven't lived until you've had a Jade Red Chicken (think spicy sweet-n-sour) quesadilla.

Yeah, Chino Bandido is a fun place. This place (Shanghai Palace) seems to have a mix of dishes from various cuisines as opposed to dishes which are a funky fusion of them like Chino Bandido, so I don't see them as quite the same. In any case, SP is on my list of places to try...

Get the Tottie Rolls. Just trust me. Get enough plates of them that everyone gets two, or people will fight over them.
Next time I go I'll let the server do most of the ordering for me; I have a feeling there are certain things they will excel at.

Ok, So I finally made it to Shanghai Palace this afternoon for an extremely early dinner! It was fabulous, hands down the best chinese is the Valley!!
We started off with the Onion Cake- which was absolutely to die for. Reminiscent of the ones from PETER LO'S in Highland Park and Skokie, IL. We then tried the highly acclaimed "TOTTIE ROLLS". These egg rolls were studded with lots of pork, noodles, and lettuce. Absolutely divine, however I cannot compare them to any other as I am an Egg-roll virgin (Crazy, I know).
We had a few questions regarding other menu items, and our waitress was VERY confused. She eventually had another waitress take over our table, and she literally grabbed her purse and left. We weren't sure if she actually took off, or if she was on her break.
We asked about the shrimp puffs- she thought that there *might* be cheese in them. They sounded like "shrimp rangoons". Our only other question was regarding the fried shrimp, we wanted to know if it was light, like tempura or a heavier deep-fried breading. She could not distinguish between the two, so we passed on both.
Very odd, as we truly weren't that annoying, but the new waitress was a delight.
We then tried the Moo-shu veggies and another order of the onion cake rounded out our dinner. The Moo-shu was a huge portion, and there was an abundance of egg- just how we like it! There was way too much food, and we didn't even eat half the Moo-shu or touch the second of pancake!
Next time, probably sometime this week-hehe, we are definitely trying the XLB dumplings and maybe the peking duck!
Tottie came out and she was so polite and gracious! The restaurant was spotless with a rather large collection of lucky bamboo! I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Had lunch today and can now soldily verify the portions are huge.
They have a lunch menue where all the dishes seem to be $5-7.
I had Kung Pao Beef. Not sure why. Usually this is a chicken dish for me, but I was in a beefy mood, yet wanted some spice and peanuts. It was decent. Not shattering, but not bad either. Most of the lunch dishes seemed Chinese.
It came with a small bowl of soup, eggroll, a fist-sized portion of rice and a coke can sized portion of the main dish. I stuffed myself, but still have enough leftovers for next day lunch.
It's not worthy of a hike across town for some sort of dining experience - but it's decent grub for a cheap price should you live or work in the area.

After reading This weeks review in the AZ Republic and with the beginnings of a cold/strep throat coming on I decided I was in need of a spicy Thai soup to clear my sinuses.

I picked up my Mom and we headed to Shanghai Palace.
We started w/ the Tom Yum w/ Shrimp about a level 5 spice......the broth was full of Mushrooms shrimp and herbs...flavored w/ lemon grass....it was fabulous!
The portion was large and it did the job clearing my sinuses.
For entrees we ordered the Bun Tom which was also delicious it was comprised of Charbroiled pork, shrimp and Tottie rolls with fresh lettuce, fresh mint, peanuts and rice vermicelli......(I have been wanting to try the Tottie Rolls ever since reading JK Grence the Cosmic Jester's review)
Next time I will order an additional appetizer of Tottie Rolls....awesome!
We also ordered the Kang Keo Wan: Spicy Thai green curry with Beef.
It was wonderful as well..... it was full of vegetables: green beans, zuccini, bamboo shoots in a flavorful Green Curry broth.
We enjoyed all of this with a pot of Hot green tea.
We were too full to try the Avacado and Ginger ice creams.......
We primarily stuck to the Thai,Vietnamese offerings......we were pleasantly surprised.
I look forward to my next visit!

I have to revise my first impression of Shanghai Palace. It has become my "go to" place for asian. The fact that it's 2 miles away, helps. However, now that I've tried a few more dishes, I take back what I said about "no bold flavors". I was right to ask the chef/owner to help me order. She is an excellent hostess, who always remembers everybody and stops to say hello.
