Uni shooters and the like - chew or shoot?

Might be a dumb question but I love uni shooters and quail egg shooters that you order at sushi places and need to know if I'm "eating" them correctly. Usually I take one mouthful and chew it, and then take the rest in another mouthful. Normally, 1 shooter will give me 2 mouthfuls. Is this correct or do you shoot them like a liquor shot? The latter doesn't seem right to me b/c of the contents in the shooter and it seems like a waste for the fish to just be guzzled down your throat without actually tasting it. Plus they usulaly have shots of tabasco in it and I'd probably choke on that if I took these shooters as a shot.

Please help!

  1. Just curious . . . what exactly is an "uni shooter?" Don't seem to have them around here (north of Boston).

Adding on to Noodles' reply, the shooters aren't a "special" thing, I don't think. I've seen them on virtually every sushi place in LA (and many in Orange County), but then again that might be b/c I'm in LA. It's definitley not for the weak stomachs. But I love uni and oysters, and I think they're great!

Uni; the sashimi bar in Clio..Boston offers an uni/quail egg spoon. It's fabulous and I don't think it's supposed to be eaten in a single shot. I suppose you could; but it seems like a waste. I like to savor it over a few mouthfuls.

      2. Mmmm, shooters. I think the rule is "get it down any way you can." But I'm with you--it seems like a waste not to chew all those yummy parts.

barlev: the shooters come in your average double shot glass and consist of something along the lines of uni or oyster, a raw quail egg, a little tobasco, some masago fish roe, a sprinkling of green onions, a dash of sesame seeds, and sometimes sesame oil or sake. Obviously there are a lot of variations, but it's always something gooey and salty in a shot glass.

They're popular at some sushi bars for people's birthdays in lieu of the frat boy tradition of taking a shot of alcohol with the birthday person.

Thanks for the info. Sounds excellent. I'll have to try it when next I'm out for sushi. Doesn't sound like it's for the faint of heart.

I adore uni... used to buy a cooler's full of the whole animals on trips to Mendocino or Humbolt and ruin rental house sinks with the iodine stains from dozens being cracked, cleaned and gorged upon. Love quail eggs, too.
But the first time a sushi chef handed me a sake and quail egg shooter, the gag reflex blew the whole load out through my nose and splooshed the entire sushi counter's glass over a quite large and embarassing zone.
One delicacy at a time, thank you.
