history of hagen dazs ice cream
supposedly it came into existence in the Bronxafter WW2. I grew up in NYC from 1951 to 1975 and never saw or heard of it until theearly '70's. And then only in the context of itbeing sold by Neiman Marcus thru their catalogue.Does anyone actually remember hagen dazs beingsold in NYC and being a well known brand thruthe 50's and 60's?? And just when did they go national?? Have they gone downhill since thefounder sold the company I'm guessing about1980??

A few details:
Haagen-Dazs (made up words -- to seem foreign) was created by Rubin Mattus, who now sells ice cream under his own name. It started in Brooklyn, not the Bronx.
It's now owned by Pillsbury, but they don't mention that on the package. You can call "The Haagen-Dazs Company" at 1-800-767-0120.

Back in college, Elberta Peach used to be my favorite Haagen-Dazs ice cream when I didn't want to have rum raisin (which gives me a little buzz!). Did anyone else like it, and does anyone have any idea whether H-D could be persuaded to bring it back as a "limited edition"?

According to a recent NY Times article, the Haagen-Dazs store at 120 Montague St, Bklyn is the original store, opened in 1972.
