I'm a huge fan of Australian wines and wanted to know if there's any restaurant in SF with a strong selection of Aussie wines (that is reasonable in price). Also I noticed that www.winebrats.org and www.winecounsel.net are holding Australian wine events this month. Does anyone know anything about either of these groups and what they are like? --Jack

I seem to remember that the Jug Shop buyers have a special affinity for Australian wines? Can anyone confirm?

I agree with the Jug Shop having the best selection of Australian wines in town--Chuck can hook you up with some pretty awesome stuff. The Wine Club is also great, but their inventory seems hit or miss sometimes. The two wine tasting groups are very different though. The winebrats is a fun scene but the wine is pretty terrible: it's pretty much sub-Safeway grade wine. I hit the winecouncil event a few months ago and really liked their selection of wines, although it was less of a "scene". I guess it depends what you're looking for.

I'm with you on your take of the winebrats. Why would you want to go to a full tasting of Oxford Landing wines? It seems that they have forgotton the whole point of wine tasting. I've never been to a wine counsel event, but I checked out their site and what theyre pouring seems pretty good: http://winecounsel.net/consulting.html#oz

Prima wine shop in Walnut Creek is having an Australian dinner next week. They also have a good selection of Aussie wines.

When I spent two months in Melbourne last summer, I drank a lot of Penfolds and really enjoyed it, and I know that they sell it here. Trader Joe's has been recently carrying a lizard-colorful label Australian wine for cheap, but I don't know how good it is.
What else do you recommend?
