great bread for making French toast in Park Slope
This morning I went in search of a decent loaf of bread for making French toast - not such an easy task to accomplish in this neighborhood on a Sunday (Saturday is a little easier w/the farmer's market at GAP - I like the white bread sold at the Amish stand for making French toast). Today it seemed that the only thing I could find was a soulless, stale challah at Key Food on Flatbush. Ick. I was about to give up and just make pancakes when I decided to instead try using coco bread from Christie's Jamaican patty place at the corner of Sterling and Flatbush. JACKPOT. This stuff made *great* French toast. I sliced it lengthwise in half (one piece into thirds b/c it was thicker to start), and it worked perfectly. It has a nice mild flavor and it absorbed the egg mixture beautifully. I think this may be my new French toast bread.

Eagle Provisions sells a light and fluffy (maybe too much so for your taste), but soulful, Challah.
