  1. Doma, in the West Village, 7th Avenue and Perry Street. Always lots of people inside working on their laptops, reading, sipping coffee and munching pastries or sandwiches. They offer Wi-Fi access if you want to bring your computer and use the Net. People stay for hours and there doesn't seem to be a lot of pressure to turn over tables; the trick may be getting one in the first place, as it is often crowded (but worth the effort.)

Slightly more precise directions: upon reflection, I realize that Doma is at the corner of Perry Street and *Waverly Place*, right before Waverly flows into 7th Ave. Confused yet? sorry about that.

Agreed. Doma is the place you're looking for. Great setting, good food, decent coffee...perfect for studying.

I actually liked to study at the coffee bars that are located in Borders and Barnes & Nobles stores throughout the city. Decent snack food and drinks, and plenty of distractions if you need a study break.

If there's a nice bookstore near you, it might be worth checking out.

Grey Dog's in the Village. It's adorable, but they keep the lights low, low. Too low to read, which I assume to discourage studying by nearby NYU students.

They also have all these signs, like "how to tell if you've been here to long." That said I had a 2-hr conversation with a friend there with no problem -- guess it depends how busy it is. And I'm usually there over lunch when the lighting is just fine for reading.

Back to the chow -- their home fries are awesome, not the tasteless crap you find in so many places.

          2. re: a&w

I find the coffee at Doma execrable and the food barely passable but it's a very cozy room, nice place to study.

Don't hold back, Peter...what do you really think? I have to be honest, though, it's been a while since I actually had the coffee there.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Joe, some of the consistently best lattes in the city, good place to study. Waverly Place, 1 block west of 6th Ave.

      2. Zanny's, on the corner of Columbus and 108th Street, is a small but comfortable coffeehouse on the UWS where it's possible to linger for a few hours at a time. Great coffee (with cheap refills), and decent lunch- or brunch-type foods — sandwiches, French toast, salads, that kind of thing. The big windows let in a lot of natural light during the day.

          1. I used to go to Orlin all the time. It can be too dark, but you can stay for hours. 8th street between 1st and 2nd. Also the Mission very near the Anthology Film archives (maybe 1st ave near 4th street?). With friends, I pretend to study in Yaffa's back patio. Le Gamin, I hear from West village friends, is a good study place around mid-day, as is a sort of part antique, part coffee shop place in chelsea. (sorry I can't say more - anyone know?)
I used to love Java Jazz near Union square, but it is now closed. I heard it was relocating, is this true? and if so, does anyone know where?
union square barnes and noble, despite being what it is, is also a staple on the study circuit.

more...also in lower east side. 9th street and A cafe pick me up. excellent for staying a while, as is alt.coffee (w/internet)

            2. Just go to any Starbucks

              1. there's a dtut on b around 3rd..

                1. re: jesse

Also on the Upper East Side (around 83rd and 2nd)

Much better than Starbucks for studying, IMO.

                2. There's a Starbucks at the corner of Park Avenue and 29th St. that, the last time we went (around 9:30 pm), was half full of high school and college students, studying and talking quietly. Since tey have installed wireless Web access, about half of them were on academic Web sites. It was a nice atmosphere.

                  1. I recommend Space Untitled, on Greene St between Houston and Prince. Avoid on weekends, as it's a madhouse then, but other times you can have your choice of tables or cozy couches. It's a huge room, food's decent, coffee's pretty good.
Further down Greene St (corner of Broome) is Cafe Cafe, pretty good picture of it here (http://www.urban75.org/photos/newyork...
Around the corner on Broome is the new branch of Sunrise Mart, a Japanese convenience store. There's a cafe section in the front with lots of sunlight, seems pretty conducive to studying.
NYU students frequent the Esperanto Cafe on MacDougal between W3rd and Bleecker. Remarkable only in the fact that it stays open 24 hours and is accessible to some great cheap food including the Kati Roll Company, Yatagan and Mamoun's.
