The Best Jelly Doughnuts - Gone!

It is with great sadness that I report that Alcazar French pastry shop on 1st ave at 10th Street is no longer. I had just recently discovered their doughnuts which they made every morning -- soft, chewy, with crisp edges, a perfect crunch of granulated sugar, and filled with delicious fresh jam (raspberry, apricot) or cream (chocolate or custard).

So know, is there anywhere I can find equally delicious *jelly* doughnuts ? Don't say Krispy Kreme, cuz I know it ain't true..

ps. They also had delicious chicken sandwiches on fresh bread, smeared with lucious homemade mayonnaise (sob!)

pps. It's now another Italian pastry/sandwich shop, if you care..

  1. There is a new italian cafe where alcazar was...and its actually very good. AND if you care....i spoke to one of the owners and the prior owner of alcazar will be baking croissants, pain au chocolate, and a few other things for them starting next month. i dont know about the jelly donuts, but...

they make a good espresso (danesi gold from rome )...and the owner makes a stellar, unadulterated tiramisu. not hard to make but easy to scrw up if you try to make it cheap.

    atmosphere? not much

Wow, that's nice to know that some of the Alcazar baked goods will return next month. Thanks for the tip.

But for now... like, in the next week, where can I find a satisfying *jelly* doughnut? Last I checked, Donut Plant only made an assortment of glazed doughnuts. If anyone has any ideas, please bring em on...

      Thanks again.

          Thanks fusilli..

I've been on the lookout too. Was disappointed by the jellies at the coffee counter/Donut place on 8th ave and 23rd. I also tried the jelly doughnuts at the Spring St Bakery next to Lombardis, but they tasted like a mouthful of cotton.

Check out the jelly doughnuts at Good & Plenty To Go on W43rd just off 9th Ave. They have great baked goods made fresh every day. I haven't had one in a few years, but I remember them as being tasty. Go early to get things fresh.

Steinway Bake Shop, Astoria, between 28th and 30th Ave, Steinway St. The cream donuts are pretty great also, the plain, not the chocolate. Good luck!

      2. I never liked Alcazar, though I admit I never tried their jelly donuts. However, the Viennese place on the corner of 11th St. and 1st Av. (called Something Sweet IIRC) has been excellent when I've tried it. I don't remember if they make donuts, though. Full disclosure: Their stuff tends to be pretty heavy, so I haven't had anything of theirs in months.

        1. "soft, chewy, with crisp edges..."

If you can get up early in the morning, the Doughnut Plant on 379 Grand (212-505-3700) might be what you're looking for. They are on vacation until Wed. Sept 6th, when they'll open at 6 am.

A year ago I was looking for this particular kind of doughnuts that Balducci on 9th street used to carry. For a long time I'd drop by and ask, "Is the doughnut guy back, yet?" Finally someone told me that the guy who used to make the doughnuts for Balducci is now opening up his own shop. I've been to the Doughnut Plant twice but both times I was too late(at 2:00 pm) and they had sold everything and gone home. (Zabar sometimes have them, but it's not good unless it's fresh)

Hope you have better luck, and that it's the kind you like!

          1. having some polish in my blood, i was pleasantly surprised to find paczki (pronounced "poonch-key") on veselka's menu a little while back; however, i wasn't able to get one (sold out)...these jelly donuts are traditionally only around during lent up until ash wednesday--a good one is better than any standard jelly donut around.

does anyone know any other polish spots in manhattan i can find paczki???

            1. re: FattailS

Try some of the Polish delis around 1st Avenue, I think? South of St. Marks. I have seen them in the window. Another possibility: Stage Delicatessen, on 2nd Avenue, just south of St. Marks, east side of th street by the theatre. I've heard they have them on Friday nights, but they sell out quickly.

Then there's always the bakeries in Greenpoint, if you wanna trek out to Brooklyn.
