Newport RI--Mama Luisa's?

We're going to be in Newport the weekend of March 18-19. A friend recommended Mama Luisa's--what's the scoop? Also, any other places you recommend? Thanks

  1. The Red Parrot is a good place. They have something for everyone. You can see their menu online.

    1. We had dinner at Mamma Luisa's on New Years night and it was exceptional. A serious departure from "red sauce Italian" and we were treated to a variety of wonderful dishes (and a killer wine list!).
A very high recommendation for this wonderful place!

          1. Yes, try Mama Luisa's.
The food is true country Italian, not like the red sauce joints that are on every corner in the US.
The preperations are kept simpler than the neuvo funky stlye restaurants. If you order a veal dish , you will taste the veal....if you order chicken, you will taste the chicken etc. etc..... The style is one were the natural food flavors are the focal point....not the chefs add-ons. I liked this restaurant very much. It feels like you are in someones homes. Interesting Itailian wines also. Have fun.

            1. I was in Newport a couple of days ago, and ate dinner at Cafe Zelda, it was very cozy and the food was excellent. (primarily seafood)

Thanks everybody for your great feedback. I've made reservations at Mama Luisa's for Saturday night.

How about a Sunday brunch/lunch idea? Thanks again!

Ocean Breeze (I think that is the name) (on lower thames across from the old firehouse and kittycorner to team one and the saltwater edge) has killer Portuguese Sweetbread french toast.

Salvation Cafe does a good brunch - check out their website for the menu.

But my old school favorite is Atlantic Grill in Middletown, a block inland from second beach. There is a good local surfshop next door and another sports store across the street to brouse while you wait for a table.

All the hotels do brunch, and that might be the one meal to do at either the Inn at Castle Hill or the Spiced Pear - both have wonderful views.
