HELP! NYC'ers visiting Mystic/Norwich this wkend!
Hi there. Hubby and I are spending 3 nights at Norwich Inn and Spa Fri-Mon. For dinner, concierge recommend S&P Oyster Company and Anthony J's Cafe. He also said that Mohegan Sun has good Todd English restaurant and that Big Bubba's BBQ is great. What do you think of these? Is Bravo Bravo better? We are not looking for super-fancy dining--just delicious food in good atmosphere. Willing to drive to Mystic, Stonington etc...We love seafood, Italian, Mexican, and anything delicious and fun or unique. Not really up for Asian or American. Anything special we must try? (ie- best lobster rolls, fried clams etc...?) Thanks so much, forever grateful!

I am on board with Anthony J's, but skip S&P. The Summer Shack in Mohegan Sun has some good seafood, but it's pricey. If it's a nice day, the view of Stonnington Harbor from Skipper's Dock is great and the seafood is good too. Some enjoy the live jazz there on Sunday that starts at 2PM, I think. Don't overlook the tavern at The Danial Packer Inn in Mystic. It is small and drafty by the door, but it has a nice fireplace, the food is really good and the atmosphere is almost magical. They have oysters too, if you ask. I think the Todd English place is too close to the waterfall so a nice conversation, which should be part of any good meal is difficult at best.
Cheers, HC

Just for the record: We had lunch at the DPI today and the fireplace was blocked up and inoperative. When we asked about it we were told that they had been having some problems with it and had to 'temporarely' stop using it. This is a check that is definately cashed in the 'almost magical charm' account I mentioned earlier. Even though it was a sunny, near-spring day today, I had to keep my jacket on in the tavern to be comfortable.
I had the portobella appitizer that I frequently get. It was good, but seemed to be made by the hand of someone other than it usually is. I also had the sushi grade seared tuna and it was almost well done, a big dissapointment in a dish like that.
Cheers,
HC

I second going into Stonington....Skippers Dock is good and a great setting....go early and take a walk around a somewhat unspoiled fishing village...and btw....the Chef at Norwich Spa and food there is great....I've been to Summer Shack at Mohegan and thought it was very mediochre...better to try a real fish house...Flanders in Old Lyme is casual, good and gets crowded....many more on the board just below....have fun!

Jaspar's summer shack is great at the alewife t stop because you can't believe it's there and there's no pretense. At Mohegan it's way over the top and IMHO it looses the charm it has in cambridge. I'd stick with the local recommendations

I wouldn't miss Todd English's Tuscany in Mohegan Sun. The food is a lot like what you'd find in Italy. Things like gnocchi with sage sauce, etc.

His pizza seems to get the most favorable reviews
