Monday lunch in Portland Maine - for a good cook

Hi all, hubby and I are going to Portland for the day on Monday do walk around and have a good lunch. I happen to be a fairly decent cook but am bored with my own cooking. Like seafood, but I do that at home really well...Any suggestions for something different? - not too expensive? can't find STreet & Co. menu, or Hugo's, we'll be walking around the Old Port.

hubby does not like Mexican, Thai, Chinese (yeah, he's boring...)likes Italian and 'American'...
please help...thanks for all suggestions!

  1. If you are looking for lunch, as the restaurants you mentioned are open for dinner only, then I suggest
BECKY'S DINER, on Commercial Street. The food is osum, and you will get a little taste of MAINE.
    Enjoy, and report back please.

    1. Norm's Downtown Lounge or whatever they're calling it these days. On Congress St.

      1. My two favorite places for lunch when I am in Portland are Duckfat (owned by the folks from Hugo's) and Scales in the Portland Public Market (owned by the folks from Fore Street).

        1. re: Wineack

          Scales is good

Portland Public Market in general is a good option

Becky's is best for breakfast IMO (and my favorite spot in town).

Norm's is supposedly great too (my wife loves it, i haven't been).

            Second Duckfat. Delicious fries!

          2. I'd recommend either the Old Port Sea Grill on Commercial Street, or be the umpteenth person to recommend Scales in the Portland Public Market.

I'd put breakfast at Mim's (also on Commercial Street) ahead of Becky's if you are looking for a memorable dining experience. Becky's is as close as Portland currently has to a "Worcester Diner-style experience". Its no knock on Becky's - its fine for what it is, but the blueberry pancakes and sausage there are no more memorable than any other Route One diner with an ounce of distinction...
