  1. Il Fiore on Main Street in Middletown is quite good if that is not too far for you. Actually there are lots of good choices on Main street.

    1. not surprising that your request elicited a middletown answer. i've been working in meriden since last july and still haven't found anything worthwhile outside of some frnchise outlets.

the nearby berlin turnpike has san souci and the mecca of prime rib, th hawthorne inn. both are quite good but not actually in meriden

you could also try the yankee silversmith in wallingford. it's just off rte 5/15

I feel Hawthorne Inn has been living on a rep that was lost 20 years ago. You can only have salty beef broth passed off as "au jus" so many times before you get annoyed.

In my opinion if you're seeking a good meal in this area(Chowhound worthy or otherwise),you would be best served by avoiding Sans Souci altogether and dining elsewhere. It's nothing less than an embarrassment to see the food that hits the table at this surprisingly "popular" spot.

        3. Il Forno, downtown Meriden on Hanover Street. Look for the yellow and blue building. Everything we have had there is good the but pasta fagoli (sp) and veal saltimbacca are fabulous.

          1. Try Fratelli's in Wallingford...a few miles from Meriden-next town over.
The bread is worth the drive.
I like the linguine with white clam sauce or the chicken piccata-served with homemade scalloped potatoes and giant caper buds.
            Plating is beautiful too.
You'll love the non-pretentious service with smile.

            1. re: Nancy

I'll second the vote for fratelli's. Don't be put off by the exterior, the food is great, and the bread is to die for.

            2. If you like Indian food, Kohinoor on the Berlin Turnpike is excellent. Delicious samosas and pakora. They also have a nice $30 dinner for two.
