Mystic/New London challenge

Hi -

First, many thanks for great tips on Providence eats!

I'm now looking for a dependable "standard American" dinner for this week in the Mystic/New London area with the following constraints:

1) Easily located off 95
2) Not a seafood place
3) A vegetarian option or two

Many of the previous SE CT posts are seafood or ethnic places. I realize I'm describing TGI Friday's, but if there are more chowish non-chain options, my group would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

  1. There's a Chili's in the New London Mall right off I-95. Charlie's at the Crytal Mall in Waterford is OK american fare, too. Paul's Pasta on Thames Street in Groton is good, too but not really what you asked for. There used to be a Steak Loft in New London, not real close to I-95 but a solid choice for steaks. I'm not sure if it is still open though.

Oops, I goofed. The above poster is correct. Steak Loft is in Olde Mystick Village There is a fish place in there too (Go Fish) and a diner type place that is cheap but not really noteworthy (10 clams). Chuck's steak house is (was?) in New London.

Thanks for the tips - we ended up at Steak Loft and were easily seated (it's huge).

The salad bar is simple but large, clean, and good. I had the stuffed shrimp/steak combo, which was a little pricey ($23.00), esp. since it's essentially a family restaurant. I ordered the steak medium, and it was pink through, but charred and dry on the outside (hard to cut!) - basically a hard block of meat - and nothing I'd go back for. The shrimp (2) were pretty small and stuffed with a bland breadcrumb stuffing, but the red-skinned mashed potatoes were ample and really tasty.

We actually had drinks beforehand at the bar/lounge at the Groton Marriot, which includes the restaurant Octagon. This appeared to be more of an upscale, sophisticated place (fairly busy on a Wednesday night) so we'll check this out next.

Yeah Steak Loft is definitely a little more family oriented, good for pub fare IMO. Not a fine dining establishment.

I'm not familiar with Octagon, but Bravo Bravo is not a bad option for fine dining either.

Or the Daniel Packer Inn for a real NE throwback

    2. There is a Steak Loft in Olde Mystic Village, visible from 95.
