Hunter's Stew
I'm looking for something called hunters stew.. or the makings for it. I believe it has wild boar, kangaroo and antelope.
I've been told it is like putting heaven in your mouth.
Anyone know of any butchers that would carry something like this?

Thanks for the suggestion, I was so excited! Just called them, they unfortunately dont have it. They're going to try to call their suppliers but apparently havent had this request.

Don't know what it is, but I know that the star market on Comm Ave used to carry a wide range on unusual meats.

I think you're kind of heading in the wrong direction here. Hunter's Stew is not a specific recipe using specific meats. The idea is it's a mix of various wild game, basically from whatever was caught on recent hunts, and is a throwback to days of sustinence hunting. I had a version in Philadelphia several years ago which had bear, pheasant, and wild boar.
Asking a butcher for hunter's stew is only going to confuse him. Rather, see what kind of game is available, and make your stew out of it. There are also hundreds of recipes if you google for it.

Exactly right, Alan. In a stew, tho', I wonder how distinctive the flavors of the individual ingredients will be. Savenor's has several exotic choices if that's what you're looking for.

Does anyone else think that savenors is over priced and a bit snobby? Not to be rude or judgemental, but from what I saw most of what they have you can get at bread and circus for less money. I've been twice and was dissapointed both times. Is it just me?

My experience at Savenour's has been: expensive, yes; snobby, no; overpriced, a bit. But the quality of the meats and the meat-cutting is very high. If you can get what you're looking for at Whole Foods, you will certainly save money there.

I took your suggestions and called Savenor's. They were so helpful that they gave me the owners cell phone number so he could make sure they had exactly what I wanted when I was ready to pick it up. Pricy? yes .. but damn that kind of customer service will woo me every time.
