  1. Your passion is....appreciated. But more detail would be helpful. If Chowder Bowl sucks, where can you recommend?

    1. re: ExtraMSG

And I feel that I have to mention that it is in no way related to the Chowder Bowl in Newport (Nye Beach area) which, IMO, absolutely doesn't suck. Great chowdah and a nice little salad bar, yummy cobbler too.

IS there a decent place to eat in Depoe Bay? Haven't heard of one...

      1. re: Jill-O

        Your right,
I saw that there was a "chowder bowl" in newport. I didn't know if these two were related, but one would "assume" so.

I ate at the one in Depoe Bay... Food was crappy, service was "EXTREMELY" lousy. This place must stay open on ignorant tourists alone.

I made the mistake of trying this place without asking the hosts at the B&B I was staying with in Lincoln City. ( www.brehouse.com) Very Very nice people! Great experience! <---<<< PLUG ;-)

Anyways, The recommended places in Depoe Bay are:

        Spouting Horn
        Sea Hag
        Tidleraves

P.S. If your going to be in Lincoln City, The Blackfish Cafe www.blackfishcafe.com absolutely blew me away!

Awesome food... Awesome service... Incredible value!

Check out the website... Make sure to make a reservation, cause this little place is jammed!

        Be Well All...

        1. re: JOEL

          Heads up!

The folks at the Blackfish Cafe are on vacation until sometime near the very end of January... It is the best place to eat in Lincoln City.

I called a week or so ago to make reservations for MLK weekend. It will be Wildflower Grill and Kyllo's for us that weekend, I suppose.

Was just in Depoe bay two days ago, and had a spectacular meal at Oceanus, a little place next door to Tidal Raves. Everything was extremely well thought-out and well prepared--the butternut squash soup was silky, the citrus and nut halibut was perfectly matched with the spinach and couscous, and the cioppino was served in a wonderfully complex broth that put to shame most of what is served under that name. The grilled artichoke appiitizer was also lovely, as was the desert (a very subtle and correctly prepared kahulua creme brulee), which we managed to polish off. all this plus a killer view of the boiling sea, a short though well-put together wine list, and extremely reasonable prices made this a real find!

Have to say we were very excited to go to Blackfish...and then very disappointed when they couldn't give us the time of day at the front counter let alone a seat and a meal. Very strange...and I've been going to that part of the coast for years. Wildflower looks fun--enjoy!

I'm sorry for your bad experience. I know that I was told to make reservations before I went. Better a day in advance as we did from a B&B in Lincoln City.

There were many people waiting. When we mentioned our name and said we had reservations, we were immediately taken to a table before everyone who was standing around.

They lack the lounge space for someone willing to wait for a table, So it would not be fun from a waiting point of view.

I'm hoping your experience was had because you were a "walk in"...???

This place is swamped. The prices are so fair, and the food is so good.

Please try again... Make a reservation before and enjoy!

                1. re: Joel

I totally agree, even if you want to be "spontanious" and do a walk-in, just put your name at the front desk and go have a coctail somewhere with a view. One of the best meals (I've eaten there at least 3 times since moving here from DC). If budjet is not a factor, I highly recommend the Bay House. Romantic, beautiful views, great service, well executed and tasty fare.

I went to Wildwood cafe with a large group, the best review was for their soup, think it was a vegatable with a curry base. The rest of the meals wern't that fab.

          2. re: Jill-O

I'd say Tidal Raves--right on the north end of town--is okay. IMO, the prices are inflated and the service was SLOOOOW the day I was there (sorry, no tip for that alone) but the food was good. Not fabulous, but good. We didn't feel too ripped off...just a little like we could have made it at home and it would be much better. They make up for the service with the view--full ocean/bay view windows on 3 sides of the building--it's awesome!! :-)

TRY CHOWDER BOWL IN NYE BEACH--NEWPORT--IT'S GOOD!!

          4. Have not been to Chowder Bowl in Depoe Bay BUT don't write off the one in Nye Beach (Newport)!! They had a terrible fire and totally re-modeled inside. They have very good (read: thick and hot) chowder, and a fresh, clean (gets a bit messy during dinnertime), all-you-can-eat salad bar (so 1980's) that's very tasty, too!! It's a great deal if you get the soup and salad bar any time of the day. Plus it's a half block from the ocean and surrounded by nifty little shops and pubs...plenty of lodging nearby...we love it.

We just got back home after traveling up the Oregon Coast. Depoe Bay will always be in my memory of one of the most lovely little coastal towns I have ever seen. The Spouting Horn is a restaurant full of history, great food and friendly service. I had crab casserole and my partner had grilled oysters. We came back the next morning and had a remarkable breakfast. I had swedish pancakes, and my partner had bacon, eggs and enough fresh grated hashbrowns to feed an army. We never did get to eat their buffett, but heard so much about it from the hotel owner where we stayed. The town is filled with family owned businesses, it was nice not to run into big business, or tacky little franchises. I hope we will retire in Depoe Bay!

            2. The wharf is scary. If you are scared, be proud. Exceptions exist.
Cioppino at Sharks' is one. Eat this.

              1. re: mrnelso

Is the Sea Hag the one right on 101? If so, I had a bowl of very tasty clam chowder and a fresh shrimp salad awhile back on a long drive from Florence to Seaside at night.

              2. There are a couple of good places to eat a short drive south, in Yachats. The...oh, hell, it's not the Dew Drop Inn, it's not the Swim Inn, it's something that silly,...oh! The Drift Inn! It's a sweet tiny-town bar with singer-songwriter types and impressive food for the setting, I'd highly recommend the razor clams and the seafood burrito. There's also a lunch chowder place where I haven't eaten (never there at the right time of day) but gets crazy raves, I don't know what it's called but Yachats is so small it shouldn't be hard to find, it's on the west side of 101 right in town, half a block past the Drift Inn.
