For those chowhounds interested in good coffee--not those puzzling Starbucks enthusiasts among us--I have a tip. La Colombe of Philly roasts probably the best coffee on the east coast. Daniel, Jean-Goerges, and a few other silk-stocking restaurants here use their beans.
I have just found out, however, that you can drink their stuff (and even buy the whole beans) without taking out a second mortgage to eat at one of those fine establishments.
Mangia--a small chain lunch spot in the style of, and a notch or two better than, the execrable Cosi--uses La Colombe beans in their coffee drinks and sells the beans at $10/pound.
The only question is whether the retail beans, which are pre-packed in 1 pound bags, are fresh. At the Wall Street Mangia i saw little evidence of high turnover. When i try the coffee, which reaches its full genius when brewed as espresso, I'll give a report.
