L'atelier on Blvd. St. Laurent just north of Fairmount in Montreal has been around for a few years and has been excellent each time I've been there. Recently it revamped its menu, which was originally more tapas-like (there still is a tasting menu along with a selection of oysters and foie gras preparations). But now it also has a table d'hote and that menu is one of the great bargains of this city (all choices come in under $30 and that includes dessert). I've been there twice in the past few weeks, once with one other person and last night with three others. All the dishes were superb. The first time the soupe du jour was a cream of white asparagus, escargots and mushrooms and it was amazing. Last night the carrot and rosemary soup was also outstanding, deeply flavorful. The magret de canard I had the first time was just about the best version of this bistro standard I've ever tasted. It wasn't just me. everyone agreed that the food was terrific.
